Native Coloradoan.

The SW part of Colorado (telluride, Ouray, Ridgway, Durango, etc) is by far the best part of an amazing state.

Unbefreakinglivable and I've been all over in this state.

Start there
way less traffic too.

Just got back from the Salida/Nathrop/Buena Vista area.  Great time on the ATVs, rafting the Arkansas, and horseback riding.  Do yourself a favor and put sunscreen on early and often, they don't just throw around 10+ UV ratings for the fun of it.

It's my family's mining claim and I'll give you details if you are interested.

I was just stuck in that fucking traffic jam on Sunday Saturday.  It was the weirdest goddamn traffic jam I've ever been in.  We would be 100% stopped and 5 miles later we're going 70mph.  Then we'd stop again.

My favorite place in all of CO so far has to be Estes Park.  Rocky Mountain National Park is PHENOMENAL.

ETA: Got my days mixed up.

In all my trips there, I've never visited.  I really need to.

We were in Estes on Sunday.  Forgot how much I love that place.  If you go, eat at the Wapiti Pub and order the elk burger.  Get a Breckenridge Brewery vanilla porter and enjoy.

Last year we visited my dad's cousin out there, and we took a trip up to Mt. Evans, past Echo Lake.  We didn't get to the top of the mountain since it was too late in the year, but we got up to about 11200 feet.  Of course we saw a lot of other awesome things too.  It was the best vacation of my life.  I'd always wanted to visit mountains, and it was like a childhood dream come true.  Some of us went running on some hilly mountain trails above 2 miles, and surprisingly I was able to keep up a good jogging pace for several miles, and seemed to have more energy than I do near sea level.  It was AMAZING.

Truth.

I spent a couple of years living down around that area, and it really was a great experience.

Most people don't understand that living in that part of the state is *really* living in Colorado ...

Go up Guanella pass from Grant (US285 South just past Bailey, or from Georgetown. The road is closed before the summit from the Georgetown side so best to drive to Grant. Drive up. Go hiking or catch some of the views.

You should see Rocky Mountain National Park at least once.  Estes Park maybe, then drive South and stop at Garden Of the Gods (Free, which is a big deal out here) and Maybe the Academy, if you want to sit under a B-52 for a while and contemplate peace through superior firepower.

A lot of people like Manitu Springs, It's touristy and Hippyish, but there is a good restaurant in an old hotel called the Cliff House.  It's affordable, but classy. You eat out on the veranda, and the food is good.  If you want more expensive, the Broadmoor is old school fancy.  If you have time, drive out to Cripple Creek.  The Molly Cathleen Gold mine has an excellent underground tour.  It's worth the price of admission, but don't go if you are claustrophobic.  All of the above should be done on weekdays only.  Too many damned tourists this time of year.

For weekends, I agree with the guy who said check out the south west mountain area.  The scenery is nice, and less traffic congestion makes it a beautiful thing.

If you are near the Western part of CO, Grand Junction, Colorado National Monument is a really cool place that never gets mentioned.  It's like a miniature Grand Canyon, complete with hiking and driving trails.  You could spend several days just walking and climbing.

That is what you call weekend traffic from Vail to Denver.

During the summer it is typical when there is a wreck at the Eisenhower Tunnel.  During the winter it is because it is Ski Season and for no other reason.

That one looks like a traffic accident. People forget how to drive even in good weather. It must be the Altitude.  Or the 'erb in Boulder.

The highways usually move a little faster, but the roads around Boulder and Estes Park are really bad on weekends or near rush hour.

The Obama Stimulus Road Reconstruction is screwing up the traffic on certain important roads.  They have been tearing up perfectly good sections of I-25, and replacing them with shitty asphalt. Been going on for years now, I shit you not.

Lived there for about a year and a half in the mid 90s..     Even having to work every day, it was still like a 1-1/2 year vacation..

I lived just outside of Rollinsville,     Rt 119, 72, 36,  46 were all fun roads to drive,  most of them had places to pull off and look around..

A couple times we took a ride up Tolland road as far as you could drive  and hiked up to an area where the only trees you see are about 6' tall and only have branches on one side because of the wind...

We also tried 34 through the park to Lake Granby, but it was closed when we went
