Which way should the fan on my A.C. compressor spin? Pull air in thru the fins and blow it out the top or pull air in from the top and blow it out thru the fins?

Pull air though the coil, push it out the top.

If the fan is stopped, but you can help it along and spin start it, chances are you only blew a condenser can. Cheap and easy fix.

I think you meant to say, capacitor.

Counter clockwise...

...assuming that you are looking at the fan from the correct end

Thank you, sir.

Ok now I'm really confused. I checked it yesterday and the fan was spinning properly and moving a lot of hot air out thru the top. This morning the house was at thermostat temp 74 but the fan in the compressor was spinning backwards. Why and how could this occur???

Maybe some kind of intermittent reversing circuitry to help keep the fins clean? Ive seen that on equipment radiators before.

Actually, they're the same thing.  Condenser is a bit of an antiquated term, but persists in terms of contact breaker style ignition systems.

Sounds like it could be a start cap for the fan.  Seen them run backwards and/or half speed with bad cap.

Are you north or south of the equator?

North of the equator but south of the mason-dixon line.

Im thinking this as well. a couple days ago when this shit started I looked at it and it seemed to be running at partial speed. Its a Rheem installed in 1997. I am hoping the warrentee company I have to deal with will realize its time to let it go and authorize a replacement of the entire unit.
