Whatever you do, do not cut the red wire

Now you tell me. That was my first troubleshooting move.
10/5/2011 5:02:54 PM EDT
[#3]
Will it POST?
10/5/2011 5:04:47 PM EDT
[#4]
No, I am not getting any response from the computer. I wonder if it is the power supply, but I am not sure how to test it.
10/5/2011 5:05:29 PM EDT
[#5]
does anything at all happen?  power supply fan go on? any leds light up?

process of elimination:
unplug all unnecessary shit and try again.  If it works, add back one by one to find your problem.
If unnecessary shit isn't the problem, switch out necessary shit one by one with known working parts if available (video card at least).

10/5/2011 5:05:44 PM EDT
[#6]
If it's totally dead except for the PS fan it may a power problem.  Make sure the connectors from the power supply are fully seated in the MB.

No, I am not getting any response when I try to power it on. No beep, no light, no fan movement, etc. Its as if the power supply is not even plugged in.

Unplug everything except cpu and memory.  work from there.

Did you turn on the power supply via the switch on the back?

Turn on PSU without motherboard - the 'paperclip trick'

[#11]
Check the power supply. You may be drawing more power than it can supply.

Get a voltmeter and check the connector output.

power strip switch not on
power strip not plugged in
power supply set to wrong voltage (actually don't know what that would do, never tried it)

[#14]
Sounds like the PSU but can't really be sure.  Did you make sure to connect the 24-pin plug from the PSU to the mobo?  Also, double check that the power switch wire is connected to the right header on the mobo.

Yeah, I am not sure which side is on, so I have tried it with each side. Still nothing

The power supply does not have a 24 pin plug

I'd go over the mobo connections of the power switch, front LED lights, etc real good according to the instructions, if the power switch on the case isn't connected correctly it would appear "dead" as you describe.

They require a blood sacrifice.

Check the manual and then ensure that the power button is in fact connected correctly.

it is like a 9v battery stick your tongue on it and see if you get anything

10/5/2011 5:22:37 PM EDT
[#23]
unplug power supply

open power supply

check continuity of each fuse

replace as necessary
10/5/2011 5:22:48 PM EDT
[#24]
Take everything back out of the case. Place the motherboard on a nonconducting surface.  Install just the CPU + cooling fan, one stick of RAM, and the video card. Disconnect hard drives and optical drives, but connect the monitor to the video card.  Make sure ALL power connectors are plugged in.  Short the ON pins from the front panel header with a small screwdriver.  The PSU should start, the MOBO should POST and then you should see an error message on the screen.

It's highly likely something is shorted out and preventing your system from starting.

I hope you have turned on the master switch on the back of the power supply.

I think this is a problem. You have four power ports with no power going into them on your mobo?

You sure about that?  I thought all modern mobos had a 24-pin ATX connection for the PSU.

I agree with the guy above who said disconnect everything except what you need to POST.  That usually gets you down to a bare minimum and then you can start the process of elimination to find out the faulty part.

Don't feel bad.  I remember reading in the 2005 Maximum PC builder's guide that the 24 pin connector is one of the most commonly missed connectors in building a PC, which is why I suggested it.  Turns out they were right, eh?

(Then again, I'm not sure how one can easily miss a huge connector with 24 wires sticking out of it ... it's not like it's a tiny one pin connector like the HDD LED header or anything.)

I'm tellin ya.. Without a blood sacrifice, you're headed for nothing but tears.

They need it.  It's tradition.  They used to need at least a half inch of cigarette ash too, but modern improvements have *mostly* done away with that requirement.
