I'm on my laptop in class right now and the fan is running for some reason. It normally doesn't do this and it is pretty loud. Is there any way I can get it to turn off?

Thanks

It's a Toshiba Tablet PC (portege)

Tagged and bumped.  I'm not familiar with the modern Toshiba tablets, but would assume that if the fan is on that it probably needs to be.

It's normally not on. It turned on pretty much as soon as the laptop was turned on. It's really annoying.

I guess it's trying to cool it down and when it does it will shut off.

Nobody else's laptop is doing it, though

that's a negative. It's done this before, and it's blowing a lot of air out the side.

That fan runs for a reason. If it doesnt shut off at all with the laptop on, there is something wrong. Go get it looked at.

Is it warmer than usual in the classroom?  Check it to make sure the cooling vents are clear of lint/dirt etc.  I'm not familiar with that tablet pc, but it may be a variable speed fan that is running on high when it usually doesn't.  Good luck.

Check the Bios and see if there is a setting for always on.

What's the Bios?

Where can I get to that?

I'm not a computer person, you're gonna have to use little words with me here

+1

I suggest a good blowing out of all the vents with canned air and then see if the behavior continues.

If your computer thinks it is over heating or getting close to a critical temp it might be leaving the fan on.

I have seen a few notebooks (and desktops) build a fine layer of dust that forms a cover over the heatsink and prevents it from properly cooling. In some cases it will over heat and shut down. I remove all devices (battery, etc.) and use an air compressor to blow dust out. You will be suprised how dirty they can get.

This might help and it might not but it won't hurt to try.

That sounds like a really good idea.  My home machine runs about 20 degrees C hotter when it's in need of a cat-hair vacuuming.

Maybe more air underneath would help.

Like everyone is saying, the fan has a purpose, it prevents the machine from over heating.  my first guess would be u have dust build up, put a vacuum up to where the fan blows air out of, and suck it out for a while, maybe that will help.  getting a laptop cooling station is another good way of cooling down a laptop that has a tendency to run hot, ive got one, email me and ill give ya a good price on it.

if that doesn't fix it, your machine is probably running hot because u have a lot programs running on your computer, perhaps run a virus scan and ad-aware.  see if you have some stuff running on there that doesn't belong.

if either of those don't fix the problem, then i would say have it looked at if its really bothering you.

Yes, maybe the machine caught the flu and is running a fever.
