I just installed a new LG Blu-Ray player.  It did not come with any software.  What software do I need to run this?  What Blu-Ray player software do you use?

Any freeware or is it all trial versions?

Thanks

I assume you mean in your computer. Windows 7 and above should have all the drivers you need built right in.

I think even Media Player will play movie discs.

I don't know of any freeware that will play blu rays.

Cyberlink Power DVD is what I use.

You can try VLC. I think it supports some some kind of blu-ray playback. Probably will have to purchase a program if you want 100% compatiblity and no headaches.

You need software like PowerDVD. It usually sucks which is why no one watches Blu ray on a PC. The most popular HTPC solution is to rip the disc using MakeMKV and watch that, then you can use an actual media player to open the video.

VLC will play blurays but it cannot decrypt commercial discs. You can use MakeMKV to decrypt them in real time. MakeMKV is currently in free beta.

Leawo Blu-ray player works OK and is free: http://www.leawo.com/blu-ray-player/

Purchase a AnyDVD-HD lifetime license to decrypt BluRay disks, it's worth it.

With any free player the tradeoff is that you cannot access any menus and can only watch the main movie.

MPC-HC is my go to free player, setup with MadVR following THIS GUIDE for the best image quality.

Playing a blu-ray on a computer is hit or miss, sadly.  My laptop has one, but about 1/2 this discs I try don't work, or require an update, or you have to be connected to the internet for it to decode.

+1 to AnyDVD HD.  Throw in Handbrake (which is free) on top of that and you can upload all your movies to a media server and throw the disks in the attic.

As far as playing Blu Ray movies, VLC Media Player works great and it's free.  My Windows Media Player would not play Blu Ray (let alone DVD) out of the box without the proper codecs.  I could get it to work but I only buy physical discs for the purpose of uploading movies to my server so I haven't bothered.  Once it's on the server, it's in a common format that any media player, game console, SmartTV, or whatever can play over the network.

Thanks for the input.  I bought the Cyberlink bundle.  Download with a hard copy coming in the mail.

Power DVD14 Ultra w/ MediaEspresso 7, Power2Go 9 Platinum for $69.00.

I tried some of the free ones and I couldn't get them to work.  The Cyberlink started right up and played the Blu-Ray disc no problem.

Here is a guide on how to set it up to watch Blue-Ray moves with VLC.  https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=105955

Personally, I like to use tool named Digiber Blu-ray ripper http://www.digiber.com to rip the movies to common h.264 videos on my computer, then use media player to stream it.  You can always re-convert it later.
