My computer for the last few days has been acting up. It only will allow certain sites to popup. AR15.com being one of them |
|
Are you using Charter for your ISP? I'm having the exact opposite problem. See: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=303503 |
It is possibly spy/adware that has infected your system. I believe your hosts file may have become corrupt. do a google search for "Winsock fix." Download it and run it and report back. |
half the service calls I do for spyware / can't connect to internet issues, the client is already running spysweeper. Spyware blaster is another good freebie. Many times though, there is not a single program that will get everything. a new XP install takes maybe 45 minutes as opposed to several hours of guessing.... |
NOT!!! Last time I had to reload it was hours and hours with all the Microsucks patches. |
So what's the problem??
|
|
Alright guys I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Still doing the EXACT same thing. Is anyone else having trouble logging into their MSN Accounts. Its picking and choosing sites too block.... What the H**L is going on ..... Programs in the new install : AVG *free edition Norton Firewall *checked its not blocking Thats it....for now anyway. Well it does have Windows basic programs.... Help Please !! - Thanks - Travis |

1-did you wipe the drive before you installed XP? [edit. Wipe the drive meaning = did you format the drive with NTFS?] 2-Its sounds like a Blaster virus/worm varient. 3-You should be running a firewall such as Zonealarm(free) to keep the worms out. 4-do you have all the windows updates...all of them, including service pack 2 5-try a different browser. Such as Mozilla Firefox. 6-are you using Internet explorer 6?...not 5 |

Kind of sounds like a conectivity issue, though certain sites work fine. A "Page cannot be displayed" is kind of a catch-all, and not particuarly specific. On a hunch, I'd say you might have a sporadic DNS issue. Do me a favor: Find a site that refuses to come up at all. Go to a command prompt and type 'ping <sitename>', i.e. 'ping www.google.com' or whatever site doesn't work. Let me know what it does. Also, while you're on the command line, type 'ipconfig /all' and tell me what address(s) you have listed for "DNS Servers". Also: Is your cable modem plugged directly into your computer's NIC, or do you have a hardware firewall/router/NAT device? |
Good start, I am going to vote routing issue, but I am taggin this as if he does what you say should shed some light into the issue. BTW this type of troubleshooting is what I have been doing for the past 9 years. I am basically a router monkey for a tier 1 ISP now. |
Well, thanks! I'm in a similar situation as you, and have been at it for 8, almost 9 years. At the moment, I work as a voice engineer for a Cisco partner doing IPtel implementations, routers, switches, firewalls, etc - pretty much anything and everything Cisco. I don't get to troubleshoot Joe Blow's PC much anymore these days (that's what my customer's IT staff is for!), so this is kind of fun. |

Internet Explorer Version 6.0 DNS = 68.63.240.6 68.63.240.5 Pinging www.evilavatar.com [66.246.72.82] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 12.124.58.173: Destination net unreachable. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Thanks for your Help - Travis |

Don't know exactly how much this will "help" you, But I have two friends (one in Chicago, IL and the other in Dearborn, MI) who are on comcast cable. BOTH have been having weird problems like this the last few days.... Sites not loading, connection problems, etc. Might NOT be your computer at all........ I'd maybe hold off on all the reinstall crap, for a bit, and see if it clears up. Just a thought... JB |
I used to do dial-up help desk so I did some of this. Ocassionally now I have to deal with this stuff too when a customer who is spending $30+K a month on an OC-3 can't get to some sites. You'd be suprised (or maybe not) at how clueless their IT staff is ETA: /24 is too easy ... 255.255.255.0 |
It's a routing issue, and it's out of your control. Just for fun, type 'tracert www.evilavatar.com' at the command prompt, and post the results. We should be able to tell if it's your ISP's router, or someone else's. You're on comcast, right? ANGST had the right hunch on this one. Those router monkeys are something else, I tell ya! |
If you can get your IP number too that would help I could even tell you the problem your ISP may be having. I forget what "winipcfg" got changed to on XP ... |
|
Tracing route to www.evilavatar.com [66.246.72.82] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 10ms 8ms 9ms 10.65.192.1 2 7ms 7ms 20ms 172.30.188.81 3 * 12.124.58.173 reports: Destination net unreachable. Trace Complete. How long will this take to get fixed. I'm fairly sure if I call Comcast they'll tell me I have a Virus so I'm not even going to try..... Edited - IP Number - 69.139.124.50 |
Probably something funky with comcat's connection to ATT. Probably would take 30 seconds to fix if a clueful person looked at it. |
|
are the sites that don't load secure sites by chance? support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444 usually only one part of all those steps actually needs to be done
|
Yup. It's a problem with ATT. Interestingly enough, their routers that appear to work also happen to reverse resolve correctly. The problem router does not. Hmmm....
Call AT&T and have one of their router guys do a 'sh run' on 12.124.58.173, and post the results here. j/k.EDIT: Oh, and enough with the virus/spyware/adware boogie man replies, already! It's an AT&T routing problem, and out of his control. |
Comcast wont touch it. Its not their problem. If you are on the net and they can ping your modem, their service works. |
Maybe maybe not.. Unfortunately none of the help desk guys there are probably good enought to ask their network guys if there is a problem. With my ISP at home (funny how I don;t use the one I work for I'd just wait it out Too bad comcast isn't using a real provider and not AT&T |
Interestingly enough, a google search has turned up a nifty little tid-bit: Comcast bought ATT Broadband. So it IS kind of a Comcast issue. This also helps to explain why they are not among the 60% of the world whose traffic goes through your employer. Nonetheless, this poor guy is going to have to just wait it out, or purchase a circuit to a good Tier 1 provider.... What's $1200+ a month for five 9's reliability and uninterrupted access to arfcom?
|
If you go that route , let me know I'll get the sales guy to split the commission |
