My laptop runs well for about an hour or so. After a while, 1-2 hrs, it is as if it runs out of memory. If on the net can't open additional browser windows. It bogs down, eventually locks up, sometimes so bad I have to pull the battery to shut it down.
After reboot, works fine for a while. Ran the memory test from Crucial.com, it shows both mem sticks, each 1 gb. Any suggestions? Details: HP DV6000 series, 2 Gb ram, Processor Intel T2060 Dual Core 1.6 GHz, running Vista 32-bit Home. |

Nothing shows up in scans. Start - > Run -> type "taskmgr" (without quotes). Click Processes tab, Click CPU tab to sort high -> low. Also try clicking Mem Usage and sorting by high -> low. Print screen on both. Save, then host image and post here. (This will tell us what's using up the CPU/RAM) You probably want to do this sometime before it gets gets to the point of locking up. |

Vista has this thing called Superfetch, which keeps commonly used apps resident in RAM for faster loading. With the amount of RAM you have, that may be doing more harm than good. I can't guarantee it's the fix you're looking for, but you may want to disable it and see if it helps. More info here. |

No one else uses my laptop. The fan is very quiet, does not always run, and in fact, it could be overheating. Perhaps my fan quit? I have blown it out with canned air, still does it. Right now I have it sitting on a "cooling tray", a Notepal Cooler Master, that has its own fans. I borrowed this from my son who used to use it with a very hot running Pentium 4 machine. When playing games it would overheat and shut down. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/AFreeMan/TaskMgr1.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/AFreeMan/TaskMgr2.jpg You seem to be fine on resources. But fuck, how many tabs do you have open in IE - 200? That sucker is gobbling up over 400MB. Edit: I have 12 tabs open i FF3.0 running on VistaX64 - 159MB. And I thought FF was a memory hog... |

I had Arfcom open, paint (pasted the Print Screen into paint) and Photobucket.
Right now I have only Arfcom open, 71 k usage. I just checked, the fan in the computer is not running. I have it sitting on this cooling tray, with the fan vent right over the fan in the tray. I can just barely feel a little warmth on the keyboard. I'm beginning to suspect the computer's fan is not turning on as it should. |

I fixed those pesky typos.
For starters, install Windows 7 RC Ubuntu and ditch Vista Windows. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/ZekeMenuar1/poster2144015-Copy.jpg Actually, Linux Mint is the way to go. GNU/HURD FTMFW (if you can get it to not panic you are far more leet than I) |

Sorry for the lowest possible post count, promise I'm not a troll though. Anyhow, did you by chance happen to notice that in that screenshot, iexplore.exe is eating up over 400mb of RAM?! "There's your problem". Something in IE (or IE itself) is leaking memory like it's a full time job. Quick fix: Get Firefox Reboot your machine first so it's running clean as it can be. Open up IE and grab a fresh copy of firefox, install it, reboot. Now, use firefox to get back here, or wherever it is you're going on the net, and do NOT open IE for any reason. See if that doesn't resolve the problem. If it does, you've got two choices: Keep running firefox (love it), or try to reinstall IE (best of luck with THAT!) without carrying over whatever is clusterfucking it in the first place. I would bet money this resolves the issue, then you simply have to figure out what your'e going to use for a browser, likely keep using firefox. :) By the way, after installing firefox, you may want to grab this as well and check out your startup locations, making sure everything that's firing up during your startup is desired: Get Autoruns Good luck! |

Seriously, about heating... the computer has been sitting on this cooling tray, with its vent lined up with one of the fans on the tray.
After nearly 2 hrs everything is fast and smooth. I had 10 IE windows open a few minutes ago, no problems. I have 14 IE windows open now, playing a youtube vidio, no problems. I need a new fan, it seems. Should I change the belt and flush the radiator, put in new antifreeze when I change the fan?

*OP, let us know how the fan install goes please. Will do. I've changed fans before in other laptops. Put new fans in this cooling tray, too. Not a problem. It's been running now, with the help of the cooling tray, for about 3 hrs now and still fast and smooth. Well, it's not a software problem... just hardware. Sorry guys, no Firefox, no Linux, no Ubuntu needed. And for once, it's not even a Vista problem, either. I can turn the fan blade with a paperclip through the vent hole, it just doesn't turn on its own. It's not jammed up with dust. I'll take it down this weekend, see exactly what size fan it needs and get it ordered. |

Yes, I know Mint is an offspring of Uklutzu. Mint 64 bit is much more refined and user friendly than any of the Linux distros out there and I've tried a bunch of them. I'm getting used to it now. When the time comes around when I have to pay for Windows 7 RC, I'll be going to Mint exclusively. |
