I'm looking for two types of KVM switches and am curious of such things exist. I haven't used KVMs in over a decade and am not up to speed with the state of the art. The first is for when I'm working at home on multiple computers with multiple monitors. I have a secured company issued laptop that has an external monitor attached. I'd like to use the same keyboard and mouse that I use with my desktop in such a manner as to be able to move the cursor from one system to the next when it hits the edge of one display; when the mouse cursor moves to the next display, I'd like to transfer the keyboard to that display as well. Is such a thing even possible? Is there a better way to do it?
The second thing I'm looking for would be an internet-based KVM. ETA: Another thought would be to use a network-based KVM switch and display the contents on a monitor attached to my primary machine. I'd think that would satisfy what I need to do. |

I use Synergy at home when I'm patching servers from the house. I use my regular laptop as the server and have the client on my work laptop. I just swipe my mouse to the right and *boom* I'm on the company laptop. Back to the left, back to my laptop. Very convenient. Here's an article:

Kvm switches are still around. Thankfully, the USB ones are much better than the old ps/2 types. Blackbox.com does sell some that provide vnc access to the machines. ..or if they are all local and networked, just use VNC. VNC is another route to consider. I use it more than any other utility at the house. I have every machine in the house at my fingertips with a simple unattended connection. TeamViewer is also neat for machines which *aren't* on your network. |
