Need some help guys. I have a secondary computer that I use for pictures, internet access, and my son's games. Unfortunately, I have no anti-virus/firewall support on it. One of my son's online game accounts was hacked recently. Thus, I would like to remedy the situation so that it does not happen again. I have read that some internet fixes will just install more Trojans, etc. How does one go about pinpointing if you do have a virus. Are there any reputable sites for fixes, or any software that could be purchased? Any help would be much appreciated!!

The online game account *probably* has nothing to do with your computer.  It probably has to do with somebody breaking into some online game server by guessing your son's username and password.

Download and install this antivirus software which is free and very good.

This anti-spyware software is also free and very good.

Also run Windows update ASAP and make sure that all critical updates are done.

Without a firewall and AV support on the machine you are wasting your time. Format your hard drive reinstall everything and download at least zone alarm and AVG.

Housecall

Go there, run it.

Chances are someone your son knows or talked to online got his password and stole the account.  Tell your son to be more protective and don't ever tell anyone, for any reason, his password or account information.

If a virus IS detected with any of the above AV software, do any of them delete or fix the virus? Or would formatting the disk be the only way? The only thing of importance to me is the pictures-vacations/kids.  Thanks for the options guys

Agreed.  Two very good products there.  Also if your running windows xp, it should come with a firewall.  I've never used it, but I'm sure it's better than nothing.

Also be sure that your son never gives out account information.  Not saying this is how his account got hacked, but usually that's how it happens.
