I just replaced the LCD screen in my Compaq Presario c700 laptop. after installing and turning on the laptop, the screen is extremely extremely dim. if I turn the brightness all the way up and move into a completely dark room, I can barely see my desktop icons. The computer functions fine otherwise. Im only somewhat computer savy, so I can only guess that I need to replace another part? maybe? The original was replaced because of some cracking.

Any ideas?

Did it work fine before the replacement? Was the picture fine other than the cracks? Not dim at all?

ETA: Maybe check your connections and make sure everything is snug, if everything is ok then it may be your inverter.

You might want to try that question in Urban Commandos.

I'd assume no, because he replaced it.

"The original was replaced because of some cracking."

Possible that you need to replace the backlight ballast/transformer as well.  Traditional CCFL backlights have vastly different power requirements from the newer LED backlights.

Too many unknowns.

New OEM part or used eBay screen?

Exactly the same part or "this will work"?

Every connection good on ribbon cable or cables?

Etc.

I had a lemon Dell laptop that they had to replace the LCD 4 consecutive times under warranty before it worked reliably and properly (in addition to replacing the keyboard, and some other parts I don't recall).

After a certain point, it would have just been cheaper for them to give me a new laptop, but no...they just kept sending out techs with more screens, which are like 1/2 the cost of the computer anyway.

It worked just fine before replacement, the screen was the only issue.

New OEM part used and all connections seem to be in order.

I'm guessing its an inverter issue? can this part be damaged during a screen replacement? well i guess any part technically can be damaged, but is replacing the inverter common?

The inverter is usually not in the screen, but in the chassis near the back.  You should have had at least two connectors going to the new screen; a ribbon cable, and a two-wire power connector.  The two-wire is coming out of the inverter.

It could've been damaged or fried if you left the laptop plugged in / battery in when you were replacing the screen, or maybe you just didn't plug the power connector in all the way.

Unless you replaced it with exactly the same part # that was in there originally, it may need a different one anyway.  Same make and model of laptop is not enough, they come with many different screens, often from different manufacturers, and you need the inverter that is correct for the screen.

Are you absolutely SURE that you plugged the inverter back in?/are you sure that it didn't become unplugged when you were putting the screen back together?
That's where your problem is going to be.  Check the inverter (or whatever it is called in your application) for burns.  If you disassemble your screen, make sure that it works before you put the laptop back together.

Thank you. You guys rock.

I ordered an OEM screen, but I'm fairly sure it's not 100% the same as the original. I will look at getting an inverter for this specific screen.

If it doesn't work, then i'll be going to get a new laptop, and now have a new target for the range.
