Why does it take my lap top 5 min or so to make my internet connection but my desk top makes the same connection in a little over a min?

The speed of your HDD, the order of your services, if your wireless-wireless takes longer than a wired connection, etc....

what kind of internet are you using.  dial up,  high speed?

do you have antivirus installed?   uptodate?


have any software firewalls installed?  zonealarm/ norton internet security.


installed any new software right before the problem started to happen??

Dail up . It has done this since day one .
Laptop runs Win 2 K .Desk top xp.

Small town . We only have one . Same phone line and everything . Just one comp takes for ever . The other doesn't

Another factor is that your desktop's modem may have a hardware controller on it, whereas the laptop's modem will definitely be controller-less (aka "WinModem"), and uses the laptop's CPU for that task.  This ties up some of the CPU cycles and slows things down too.

Finally, your desktop modem may have the "Quick Connect" feature that has been available on some modems for the last 3-4 years, which allows a much faster connection to a similarly-compatible modem, as it can bypass most of the analog speed negotiation process.  The laptop's modem almost certainly lacks this feature.
