which DVD playback software are you using?

you will need to use a player that can decode the multi-channel (Dolby Digital AC3, DTS) soundtrack to get audio.

something like InterVideo WinDVD or Cyberlink's comparable product.

I just had the same problem. I was using Sound blaster by Creative. For some reason unknown all sound was gone. I tried un/reinstalling SB and no joy. Then I right clicked a .wma file and it asked me to install/associate all these additional files to be played by Windows Media, I said WTF why not and I got my sound back. Don't ask me how it worked, just that it did. I can only figure there was sa "hiccup" somewhere and it killed something that was brought back by reinstalling Windows Media. Go figure.
