Concealed Weapon Permit Process

Now that Kearney allows folks to carry concealed weapons, some of you might be thinking about getting a permit.

If you're going to apply, count on weeks even months before getting your permit.  There's a long list of requirements to meet first.

Kearney throws out its concealed weapons ban. Steve Hancock thinks its about time.   He's one of about 4,700 people statewide who has a permit.

Hancock, a Grand Island resident, said, "It's a constitutional right and that's part of doing my duty as an American citizen."

Steve, like all applicants, had to take a 8 to 10 hour training course led by a certified instructor approved by the State Patrol.

"We teach conflict resolution, situational awareness, knowledge of a firearm, and shooting fundamentals," said Tim Kostrunek, a certified instructor.

There's also a target practice requirement.  Applicants have to score at least a 70 on their shooting skills and a written test.

"Then, it's onto the State Patrol for fingerprints and a background check. Bring along identification and proof of citizenship. Even if it all checks out, a permit isn't guaranteed."

Kostrunek said, "If we have any reservations about somebody that we feel might be a liability or could be an issue in the public with a firearm, we will not allow that person to obtain a permit."

Those permits don't come cheap. A hundred bucks goes to the Patrol.

"Anywhere from $100 to $150 for the course and then buying the firearm and the ammunition," said Kostrunek.

For Steve, it's money and time well spent. He wants to be prepared if ever a threat to his life or the lives of others.

"In today's world, things are getting a little crazy. So, it's a comfort to know I can use it if I need to. Hopefully never will," said Hancock.

Due to a backlog, it takes at least six weeks to get your permit in the mail. It's good for five years and is available only to residents of Nebraska.

Don't need a CCW permit here. Leading the nation in both socialism and 2nd amendment rights. Contradictions galore

Seriously why doesn't someone sue in these areas like Heller did? Cost too much to sue? People don't think they'd win? The liberals used the courts to get what they want, why can't we do the same?

Now waiting for reciprocity. If the latest bill proposed here passes we will not need a CCW permit unless carrying in another state.

Sounds pretty tough and it doesn't sound like they're "shall issue."

I only needed to show the the NRA hunter safety card from the course I took when I was 12 years old to meet the training requirements here in VA.

It's easy enough.  Took a class on Sunday.  Went to State Patrol office on Monday.  Took a whole 15 minutes.  Paid my $100.00 and had my permit in four weeks.
