Any pro tips?

You guys were awesome getting me prepared for the sports scene.

Have some school stuff coming up, and I want to practice for this summer, where I am trying to finagle a press pass for the summer concert series at Jones Beach.

What kind of concerts?
What is the venue?
What is the lighting?
How close can you get?

For now?
Standard school band / orchestra / chorus.
Typical high school theater, though on the large side.
Lighting is a variety of floods and spots, no idea of temperature.
Stage is usually well lit, no colored illumination.
Distance won't be an issue, neither will equipment.

I want to just try some stuff out for now, play a bit, see what I'm comfortable with, move around, experiment.
This is about as controlled a venue as I can start with.
Going into the summer, it will be large outdoor amphitheater, full stage sets, crazy light and production.

I guess I'm looking for a pearl or two, that has come from experience.
I know I have to deal with the learning curve on my own.

The first thing to think about is the shutter speed needed to freeze (or not freeze) the motion of your subjects.
The lighting is always lower than you think. Ultimately you will probably want some f/2.8 zooms, and the ISOs will still be higher than you like.

Light metering is the tricky thing. If the stage is evenly lighted, matrix or center-weighted will work OK. If it is not evenly lighted, center-weighted or spot meter will be your best starting points.
