Congress Approves Extending Jobless Benefits
http://kdka.com/national/unemployment.benefits.congress.2.1819676.html Congress has approved legislation to restore unemployment benefits to people who have been out of work for six months or more, ending a seven-week interruption that caused 2 1/2 million people to lose unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week. "The other side says that these unemployment benefits stretching to almost two years are needed and must be added to the $13 trillion debt, even as they claim their trillion-dollar stimulus plan has been a success at creating millions of jobs," said Rep. Charles Boustany, R-La. "It makes you wonder if they're looking at the same jobs data as the rest of us." Democrats countered that many economists say unemployment benefits boost the economy since most beneficiaries spend them immediately, injecting money into the economy. But any such effects are likely to be modest when measured against a $14.6 trillion economy. "Unemployment benefits protect those who are have lost their jobs through no fault of their own but would lead to more jobs, higher wages, and a stronger economy for all Americans," countered Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "The money will be spent immediately on necessity, injecting demand into the economy, creating jobs." The first 26 weeks of jobless benefits are paid for by the states. Thursday's legislation renews a federally financed program providing up to 73 additional weeks of benefits in states with high unemployment rates. |

huh. I have been unemployed for a month and absolutely refuse to get a welfare check. No matter what, I will not accept money from the government. as always, FUBO I understand your sentiment, however if you've been working, your employer has paid into the system, you should feel no shame in taking a HAND UP. That's exactly what it was there for. I think the problem most of us have is with those people that make unemployment or welfare in general a lifestyle. It's the abuse of the system that pisses people off, not the hand up when it's really needed. jmho, best of luck to you. |

Long term welfare usually contributes to massive inflation. When the government can give away 5% of the GDP and we only have 3-4% inflation... One has to wonder how bad of a deflationary shit hole we live in. I mean think about it; something like 10 million people just get handed money every month and consumer goods prices pretty much stay the same. The longer this shit goes on, the more I'm adopting a "doomer" outlook. |

I has a bucket, and I has a pool that's losing water. It's affecting my shallow half the most. The deep end has lots of extra waters. So, I dips my bucket it in the deep end of the pool, and I pours my bucket in the shallow end of the pool.
This has to work, I swears it. |

i have no dog in this hunt.
however, from a somewhat conservative radio station a couple of days ago, i heard the following statistics.. were are currently in an emergency extension of jobless benefits of 22 weeks. during two previous less severe recessions, emergency extension of jobless benefits went past 33 weeks or thereabouts. now sure how are we going to pay for it, but on the other hand if previous emergencies extended the benefits to almost 3 years and the current scenario is the worse since the 30's it becomes something the dems can clobber the republicans on come november. i have not checked the above for veracity, but consider the politics of the issue. dont want to give the dems one toehold in the coming elections. |

I wonder how closely the map of states receiving extended unemployment benefits will mirror the map of states that went for Obama in the 2008 election. |

My understanding was that this will be the greatest number of times it has been extended. If someone has other information please post it. How long would people like this to go on for.... forever? I see too many reports on the news of employers receiving job applicants who don't really want the job, only so they can say they've been looking for work.... meanwhile we have illegals do the menial work we don't want to dirty our hands with (sending money out of our economy back to their homeland) and get stuck paying their kids schooling, their hospital visits, etc. This country is so fucked up. |

Why work, when you can fuck off all day and still collect a check.
