When a contractor does a knockdown ceiling, what color is that mix? Is it just drywall primer?
My wife got a little over zealous while mopping the upstairs bathroom and some mop water went down the floor register and made a small stain (about 1" x 12" long) on the kitchen ceiling. Ceiling is intact/no damage but I have a nice discolored stain on the ceiling. I have some Zinsser oil-based stain covering primer on it now but it's definitely whiter (like a bright white) than the ceiling color (at least while it's wet.) I want to get something to match the ceiling color as close as possible to apply after the Zinsser dries. |

You can go to the local hardware store and by knockdown ceiling paint. It comes in a spray can and it's designed to work better with that different white.
I've used it for drop down ceilings with great success... I assume you'll find the same success with a knockdown ceiling. |

A knock down finish is achieved by spraying thinned down sheetrock compound onto the surface in an orange peel pattern, and then using a trowel to flatten the high spots.
Some contractors throw a gallon of flat paint into the mix before spraying it on. Some contractors do not. That makes it hard to tell how much paint, or what color of white, was in the mix. It is possible the ceiling has never been painted. |
