So I've HEARD of a few people shooting a 100+ rounds without a break and the rifle got so hot that it discharged the round in the chamber. Is there any truth to this? And if so,I keep a gun in the car while Im at work. What is the average temp that this can occur?

Your car is going to be on the order of 140F.  I'm not going to bother looking it up, but cook-off would require a heck of a lot more heat than that.

Those are called cook offs, and will happen in closed bolt machine guns after a lot of firing.  This is why most machine guns that are capable of throwing a lot of lead downrange are open bolt.  It is unlikely that you will get a semi auto hot enough to cook off a round.

Your car doesn't even approach the temps needed to bake a round off.

I burned my hand on an M16 barrel once.

Never cooked off a round though.

As a long time M16 shooter (and abuser) I can tell you this - the gas tube will burst long before the chamber ever gets hot enough to cook a round.

Good to know! I'd rather be safe than sorry. Thanks
