What other job can you get in which you have the opportunity to get shot at, spit on, pissed on, shit on, have the opportunity to catch fleas, lice, HIV, Hep B,C. What other job are you required to be a a garbage man, a janitor, a psychologist, a marriage counselor, a politician, and a priest. A cop must enforce the law and serve the people, but in most cases do it without thanks or appreciation. If you get a traffic citation, it's always because the cop was an asshole. Or is it possible that the cop was just doing his job and you actually committed a traffic violation. Sure there are bad cops out there, but for the most part they are good guys doing a thankless job for little $. If you are a cop basher and you think you can do the job any better, my advice to you would be to go take the test. |

Thing is, anyone going in to the profession knows all this from the beginning. So they made a decision to accept the pay, the risk, etc. before they took their oath.
IOW, none of what the op posted is a secret, so it bugs the shit out of me when I hear people whining about it. It's like a plumber bitching because he has to plunge shitty toilets.

Most of them are nice guys, huh? I'm always extremely polite and they still give me shit for my 'attitude'. 
My favorite is when they break up parties and then arrest people for DUI.  Maybe you shouldn't have broken up the party...

A plumber having a bad day and a bad attitude doesn't mean your life gets changed forever, and your basic citizen rights get taken away. A plumber's bad attitude means you may have to call another plumber. A cop's bad attitude means you may have to spend the next 10 years in jail, or get shot. Cops are held to a higher standard because of their position at the potential "fulcrum points" in someone's life. Just like airline pilots are held to a somewhat higher standard that Hollywood tour bus drivers. |

The majority of the populace wouldn't stain their back to do anything for anyone and then you have those that are willing to risk their lives for others, for $12 an hour sometimes. Thank the folks who pony up and do these jobs. Want a society to plumit, take away the police. |

Cop bashing
It's only bashing if it is not true and demonstrable. In this area, the stultifying mediocrity is both true and demonstrable despite pay rates well above the local average. Regrettably, the quality of the personnel in the various area PDs is not similarly above average but significantly below. |

| I literally know thousands of LEOs in every capacity, all over the country. Both active and retired. Every last one of them really, really, really, want to be police officers. The ones that found out they didn't like being a cop after swearing in, quit and did other things. Its not like the military. Its a civilian job and you can quit being a cop at any time you want, just like any other job. You are not serving a cause greater than the man. You are supplying the business of the legal system with paying customers. Most of the LEOs I have known, would do it for free if they had to. Its really quite simple. If you didn't like doing it, you wouldn't. |
