I stumbled on this image titled "corpse grinder." When googling, I found one other similar image, both are supposedly from insane asylums. The rest of the Google results are some death metal band pics.

Anybody know anything about this? Is it really for grinding up dead bodies?

It may be for cremated remains.  They grind them down after roasting.

It may be a bone grinder. You know grandma's ashes? Those are what's left in the retort and we grind it up. Almost everything but the bond is vaporized so it's all that's left. Oh, and sanitarium does not equal insane asylum.

Hobart chopper.

Used in making sausages with a fine grind like knockwurst, hotdogs, liverwurst.

Great at pureeing things into a smoothie consistency

Technically called a cutter mixer.

We call it a horizontal chopper.

Wanted to add that to my above post.

Also may have been used for grinding corspes.  Horbart machines are quite versatile.

Our repaimen have some tales.   Using standing mixers to mix motar etc etc.
