I downloaded Windows 7 through the academy alliance program my school offers.

How in the heck can I create a boot disk to install Windows on a fresh drive?

no.  im an academy alliance user just like you.  the file you downloaded is an exe that once run, will extract an .iso for you to burn to a dvd that you can boot from.

eta:  you elected to noy try win8?  they took out win media center from win8, you have to pay for it now.  plus win8 is really not good for power users.  but for grandma who needs an easy to use interface its good.

If you have a 4gb flashdrive you can also load the .iso onto that.
