I love crossfit, its the greatest workout plan, super awesome gnarlyest cool out there...
The awesome can not be expressed in words, only in avatars! Yeah, like that!
recently got started. Watching videos, doing some wods, all the normals crossfit stuff.
loosing weight at a stagering rate. yeah, i need to loose alot, what a great way to get started.
Thanks crossfit!

BIG question for you veterans though!!!
Why in gods holy name do all the crossfit shops charge SO MUCH?

My local place wants $250 for the elements class. the $180.month......
My 'name brand gym' is 1/5 of that, and I get a full gym, a pool, unlimited use of other gyms.
There is no way in earth I can afford or justify what my local crossfit wants.(and damn do i want to go there!)
What is it with the crossfit shops? Why do they feel it should be so expensive? I have a few theories, but I wont mention them, as they would be inflamitory, and that is not my intent. I want to justify why I should spend so much on 1 specific activity, when i get my wife and kids and I in our normal gym for half that.
And I have heard the excuse "isnt my health worth it'? Of course it is! I feel like im getting duped by some super duper gym rats, i cant shake that feeling.
I buy guns from my local shop, I use the ace hardware not the big chains, farmers markets, etc. But this one I cant figure out.

Please someone help me understand ok?
Thanks Y'all.

There is a big element of commercialization to Crossfit, which is probably the one thing I don't like about the concept.   While it is a pretty solid program for general fitness, it does seem to cater to a certain "yuppie" (if yuppies can be said to exist in this decade) clientele.

That being said, you are talking about small-sized, trainer led classes, not just a place providing equipment.    Obviously it varies from affiliate to affiliate, but the local one here usually has no more than an 8 to 1 ratio.   Classes can be purchases ala cart via punchcards at $125 for 10 sessions, monthly plans can be a bit cheaper depending on how many times you may go during the month.    While membership fees at a "normal" gym are significantly lower, once you start throwing a trainer into the picture, I think you'll find that they aren't so dissimilar.

The way I see it you are paying a lot for the attitude of the gym. Pretty much everyone there has the same common goal. Ive never checked out the local crossfit gym, but the pictures on their website show a bunch of stuff thats discouraged in your typical health club. Try taking a six pack of beer to the globo gym! Some people are willing to pay for that, some people are not.

As much as I love the program, I agree that the affiliates seem to be overpriced. BUT, there are some reasons why- affiliates have a yearly fee they have to pay for one, they also are not going to have as many clients so maybe they have to charge more to break even.

Of course maybe they feel that they "can" so why not....

Personally, I have never been to an affiliate for precisely that reason. I watch the videos, I use the forum over there for questions etc...

Let me also add that I feel the best way to spend money would be to slowly start buying stuff for a home gym. After a year and a half I have everything I need except a glute ham developer (the thing for back extensions). My wife also does it with me so I have a partner.
So, that being said, if I were you I'd buy stuff for a home gym, cancel your other membership then save up for maybe an Oly lifting class at the affiliate because THAT is something me, you and everyone else could probably use a class in.

I think the enviroment is what you are paying for. For 180.00 mo you can build and get what you need in your own garage.

For me and my goals, the whole crossfit vs. goals vs. cost vs. what ever else just isn't there for me.

The commericalization of it is huge now...even down at FLETC the whole crossfit thing has cost the tax payers some coinage
.

No doubt it is a great program, I implement some of the exercises..(or better style?) with my weight routine and my cardio...IE benching, then going right to the pull up bar then right to arm curls...keep all the blood in my core...get it all moving.

Impressive. However, there is a kid from my neighboorhood that did 2,409 Pullups in 12 Hours. World record holder (for a time) like his dad was. And he is something like 6'2"

I would rather see how many dead hang's he can do..Jesse Marunde doing 30 dead hang's @ 310 lbs is more impressive (to me) than a guy who weighs 135 kipping out 100.

YMMV.

I'd like to have a gym close to me.  Seems like an awesome experience to me.

Another good thing is the core of Crossfit is extremely conservative. The articles on the WODs are often good reads

Yes, both of those are very impressive, but the whole point of Crossfit is to be good at everything...so...in those 2 examples, how are their run times? How about their deadlifts? (I would imagine the 310 pound guy can deadlift a house, but what about the run?) See what I'm getting at here?
If he can do 100 kipping, I would wager he could EASILY do 50 deadhangs.

And to add to that statement, Spealler took 1st the running event earlier in the CF Games

Everett is getting owned by the 2 early runs right now, hope he can pick it up

-Can't believe Chris or Josh didn't make the finals
