....How much better would TV show stories be if, in the very beginning, the writers/producers/whatever decide to only go 3-4 seasons?  Have a defined beginning and a defined end, and you have a real story that can be told.  Once that's over, work on another great story for 3-4 seasons.  I think this is what made Battlestar Galactica so great, is because they knew when they wanted to end it, and therefore didn't waste shows on stupid crap.

That is all

I think you just described the greatness of Breaking Bad, and the laughable opposite of Lost's storyline.

Exactly.  The creators of Lost admitted after the 5th or so episode they were just making shit up.  There was some deal of that in BSG, but at least they knew where they wanted to go with the story.

I think LOST could have been done a lot better towards the end.  They got downright lazy in Season 6 and even had multiple continuity errors.  I actually think if there was guaanteed room for a seventh season it could have ended better and allowed for a better planned conclusion.  As it was, it seemed rather rushed.  The turning point for the show seems to me to have been the writer's strike (which hit Season 4), which I'm sure is no coincidence.  I did enjoy most of the show.

Fringe comes to mind. The entire show was written, or at least very well planned out, before they shot the first episode. Its a shame that this is the final season.
