What's the difference between Double Action and Double Action Only?

I'm pretty familiar with the whole SA concept. I'm still a bit puzzled between DA and DAO however.

Thanks.

DA is usually DA and SA,

DAO is, DAONLY all the time.

(In other words, DA, the hammer is drawn back as you pull the trigger, then realeased.  While SA, the hammer stays "cocked" before a lighter trigger is pulled)

When its both DA/SA, the hammer is drawn back as you pull the trigger, (It uses the force from the the trigger being pulled to move hammer into firing position.) then once the pistol cycles, it is SA afterwards. The slide leaves the hammer cocked like it would normally on an SA.

Double action only is like a revolver.  Pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and then releases it.  Traditional double action is like that for the first shot, but then is single action for subsequent shots; the only action performed by the trigger is releasing the hammer, not cocking and releasing (double=two actions).

In DAO, you CANNOT cock the hammer manually.  Think about a revolver with the hammer 'thumb' cut off.  You can't get your thumb on anything to cock it, so you HAVE to pull the trigger all the way.

In DA, you can.  If a semiauto is DA, it's usually DA/SA, meaning if the hammer is down, you have to cock it manually, OR pull the trigger the whole way.  If it's DAO, the hammer stays down after firing.

"Double Action Only" is a condtradiction in itself. You get two choices with "Double Action", how many do you get with DAO?

What's that phrase again? A solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

That is not what double action means.

Double action means that pulling the trigger does two actions.  First, it cocks the trigger and then second it releases it.  Single action is the trigger only drops the trigger and does not cock it.

Codename46,

Do some research on Safety Action, often called DAO, but it technically isn't.

Hmm, it makes actually sense if you put it that way! Point conceded, but it still is an answer to a question no one asked.
