Did this get posted yet? DC residents go apeshit over the snow and clear out a whole supermarket, veggies and everything.

DC, Ye are of little faith.

I guess they did not hear Obama was getting ready to break out a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread for a shindig on the lawn.

WOW.

I bet it would take a whole 6 hours to restock every store in the area.

30" of snow here is like the end of the world.  I'm guessing some people won't be dug out until Tuesday or later.  The metro area state governments aren't equipped to deal with this amount of snow because we don't get anything like it.  This storm came within an inch of a 100 year record.

A lot of the food shopping was to get Superbowl party food in advance.

I deliver tortillas to grocery stores, 2 weeks after christmas was a divergence empty fridges apparently, because the stores got hammered, out of milk etc.. just a coincidence....

That was my "scared straight" moment and have started serious prep habits, 20 cans of food a week extra, gonna build up the TP and water stash too in the attic, everywhere... what you see in that pic could have happened in mere hours.

I spent a couple decades in Colorado.

The ones that survived their first winter never forgot how important warm blankets and flashlights are.

By the third, everyone had a fireplace or some sort of space heater.

I think frostbite is that absolute best cure for stupid that god ever invented.

A serious "smite from jesus" blizzard would probably kill 3/4ths the people inside the beltway.

We have been darned lucky in my neck of the woods.
It is the snowiest recorded winter in the last eighty years but the snow never came more than six inches at any one time so it has been more than manageable even out here in the hinterland.
Heck even our rural garbage service has made the rounds in all but one week and that's saying something!

I wish the folks out around the beltway fare thee well.

Yeah, but 18 adults and kids have to cram into any car that runs well enough to get to the food house.

Contrary to news reports, 32" here in Gaithersburg, and we're dug out, as far as our vehicles are concerned, just waiting for the company contracted to plow our condo parking lot to send someone other than the one who came earlier tonight, I'm pretty sure by the job it was Stevie Wonder.

We'll be venturing out tomorrow afternoon to survey the carnage.

As far as the grocery stores, you had three factors to consider:
1) Epic winter storm, landlocking homeowners for 1-2 days
2) Super Bowl Weekend
3) Most families in this area re-supply for the following week on Saturday and Sunday and figured they might not make it out on either day due to weather.

So yeah...Snowmageddon sucked, and I've had enough snow this season to last a freakin' lifetime, bring on the Heat and Humidity.

In the south, whenever snow is in the forecast, there is always a run on .....bread and milk.

Because without those two, you will surely die within 24 hours.

I have thought of marketing a box of instant milk and a box of bisquick as the Ultimate Southern Snow Survival Kit.

Good news dude, you're supposed to get hit again on tuesday, and again next saturday.

The jury is still out on how much you are going to get, but the number 6 keeps coming up.  The one forming up in the GoM for next weekend, will really be the one to watch.

I've heard 6-10 for Tuesday, next weekend is too early to call.  There have been times we've been forecast for other "snowmageddons" where we've gotten a dusting, and other times dustings have turned into blizzards overnight.

That said, we dug out yesterday even before it stopped snowing, and our street has been plowed.

Syrup man, you forgot the syrup!!!!!!!!!!

Quite honestly, one month of severe food distribution issues would have 1/2 the country rioting in the streets and looting just like Haiti.

I'm in lots of basements as a part of my job. Few observations. Old people have a lot more food stashed then they will ever admit to. People who live out in the country [other then yuppie transplants] have a decent stash. Farmers.....need I say more? Welfare types, all crap short term food, no long term food laid back, lots of electronic crap though. Average middleage/class in the city, maybe a few weeks worth, mostly stuff no one really likes but it would keep you going. Younger city people, 3 cans of tomato paste/sauce and 4 things in the fridge, 3 of which are expired and growing on their own. Lots of fast food emptys in the trash. They might last 3 days before panic sets in. Single women, [single/divorced] lots of stuff to keep the cats going, mish mash of goofy food stuffs, most past expiration dates, they don't really have a clue what they have or don't have. Older Black couples, surprisingly, these people have it together better then most people think, they are nothing like the typical SBF with kids and 3 daddies somewhere or Caddy Escalade and nothing else but 10K in home theatre single Black guy, they usually have a pretty good stash and would do quite well for a while. They are also usually quite clean living which is a nice change. Unfortunately, they are a dying breed, because the next generation isn't anything like them. [gotta show off what you have, can't show off preps] Younger white couples, live off fast food/restaurant food/take home, nothing stored but a few cans of "gourmet" stuff, mushrooms,  sauces and the like, like to shop every other day for easily perishable foods and buys in small quantities/high prices. Older single white guys, [usually divorced] are either prepared to last a while with a good assortment or would starve in  a week as they eat out[ fast food ] most of the time, not much in between.

The weather forcasting part happens everywhere.  These days, a lot of it happens for ratings.

In case it does happen, don't forget to clean off the roof.  3+ ft. of wet snow is a lot of weight.

I used to be stationed at Fort Meade, MD. I remember one snow we had, they raved about how big it was going to be. The roads were covered Monday morning. By Tuesday they were pretty much clear, and Wednesday through Friday they were clear and dry with sunny skies. They kept the schools closed all week anyway.

its typical i lived there in 96 and the same thing happened. Schools were closed for a week but the snow was gone in 3 days. We got about an inch of snow here in Houston a few months ago and it was worse. The now was gone by lunch time but some  people were acting like it was the Rapture.

For us it was actually a pretty decent snow event.  The road crews were right on it and most people around here are pretty good at driving in it anyway.  We got about 12-15" here. I had a friend that came by Friday night that got stuck in my driveway because I hadn't plowed it yet, but that was no big deal either.  We spent the evening watching movies and got it out the next day when we plowed.

You can see his car in the background all helpless and what not.

Bloom down the road had plenty of milk, eggs, TP, salad, etc.  Bread aisle was bare. Folks at the store said that resupply is hit or miss. Took the wife's car, got gas, and food run, roads are ok once you get out of the neighborhoods. Helps to have snow tires on her car

PS:  Yes I remember seeing pics of Moscow food/bread lines.  Monday and Tuesday ought to be exciting in DC
