Hey all, just looking for some help with regards to getting my DD214 all squared away before I get out. First of all, there is no record I can find anywhere of the Navy Expeditionary Medal I received on my first deployment in 05-06...I've checked my service record(even the evals), checked that crappy Navy Awards website, done everything I can think of. Now I'm willing to just say whatever and let it slide but is there anything I would be giving up later on down the line for doing this?
Also, for you navy folks, do they normally put your warfare qualifications on the DD214? I was going to request that they did, but our personnel office is super swamped, plus I'm an E-5 dealing with a jerk for an E-6 so it really isn't working out too well. I guess I should go ahead and have them put my 3 old NECs on there too while I'm at it(I currently don't have any but held all of the others for >1 year which I believe is the requirement). This whole process is so frustrating though, probably the most important piece of paper for my time in the military and I'm still being treated like fucking livestock....I loved finding out that they'll be snail mailing my official copy from the Gulf when my EAOS comes around as well. Ah crap, I guess I sort of turned this into a rant about the whole separation process. Any help would be appreciated though, thanks! |
| The dates you were with your units should be recorded, they should be able to look up what medals/ribbons you rate based on that alone. As for petty office Jerk, just be clear with him that he is going to have to deal with you until he does his job correctly. Your DD214 is NOT something you want to shrug your shoulders over and let slide. |

Your DD214 is NOT something you want to shrug your shoulders over and let slide. Yeah, I'm contacting my old CMC to see if he can point me in the right direction now since I'm on a different base. It just frustrates me that the burden of proof is on me because some of these records are so poorly maintained. I know we earned the medal though and I'm sure I'll get it straightened out soon. I did find it interesting that the ship won't give me a copy of the official DD214 until my actual EAOS instead of just handing it to me when I go on separation leave. That means they'll be mailing it from halway around the world and I won't get it in time to do a bunch of stuff for my college orientation/registration. Oh the joys of government service I guess. The PS1 literally told me that I could "come to the ship the day after my EAOS if I needed it that bad." I politely declined saying that I wasn't willing to fly halfway around the world to pick up a piece of paper....

Yeah it's pretty standard that they won't send it until you're actually released. They should have it completed and typed out for you to look over BEFORE you go terminal leave though. Wow, now they're saying they won't put any of my old NECs on block 11 because I haven't served in them for awhile. I looked at the BUPERSINST on filling out the DD214 and it says nothing about the NEC being current. Well, it does, but only for the FIRST NEC in the block, not the others. This is going to get ugly and frustrating really quick.

You're talking about a DD FM 214WS (work sheet). Insist on it being correct before you depart. You only get one chance to get it right without having to do a Correction to Military Record after you separate. |
