I wiped my computer out and reloaded XP.

I try to play videos in Real Player, Quicktime,  and Windows Media Player.  I get sound but no picture.  Still the same problem I had before the reloading of XP.

I've tried videos that I know are good.

Missing codec...... What file type are you trying to play?

DIVX

Also could try K-Lite

Maybe try and update the players, that might help.

You need the right codec. Theres tons of codecs out there, and I truly hate playing the codec game.
Try AVICodec to determine what codec your file is using. Also, look for a codec pack as well.

I've always hated the codec game. I use ffdshow + Real QT + Real Alt + Updated Windows Media (Codec 9)

maybe a video is using AC3 audio codec?  but you would probably get the divx video and just no sound then?

Use Quicktime, and go into its options and make sure YUV flipping isn't enabled.

That worked for me.

And then I switched over to ZoomPlayer.

ffdshow will play most videos. Its not a codec pack either so it won't screw up your system.

After installing ffdshow, be sure to set it up so that it will play all stable encodings. Go to start->programs->ffdshow->video decoder cofiguration, then select codecs (left side of window) and right click over any of the codecs (right side of window) and select set all stable codecs to libavcodec.

What kind of video card do you have? Does it have a TV output? If it does maybe it's redirecting the video (overlay) to the TV-out.

Here is my advice:

Are you using the on board video card or an AGP slot video card?

Did you install the drivers and the second party video player software from the video card manufacturer?

If not, did you download and install them?

I have found that the quickest way to get video working when all else fails is to install a legal version of Nero (not the free trial version either).

My two cents worth.

I used Quicktime to get it working.   And then I switched over to Zoom Player.   Quicktime was only a bridge to something good.

The YUV flipping option....man,  I found it ONCE.   It's not in an obvious location.

I'll try to find it again.

Ok is this a laptop? If so I think I know what your problem is. You either have the external VGA port enabled, or the video output enabled. It may also be something where you have mirror on or dual screen on. If one of these is enabled then yes the video would not play on the laptop screen only on the VGA output. You may need to hit like alt and one of the function keys (it would have a monitor symbol above it). Hope this helps.

Ok it could be the same issue it is not set up as the primary monitor. Try disconnecting the external monitor and see if you can see it on your laptop monitor.

You need to look at the laptop keyboard to see the function key I am talking about.

That is what I am getting at the laptop monitor is set up as the primiary monitor. You need to go into the nvidia software and tell the external to be primiary. If you don't have the nvidia software go to their website and down load it. The screen will look similar (mine is desktop) to this:

Fyi if both screens are on and showing the same thing you are in mirror mode and will have the same issue until you get to dual screen mode (diff info on both screens) or switch the external to priminary.
