I have an ancient Westell 7500 DSL modem/router which came originally with my DSL internet initial hookup.  Fast forward 5 or 6 years later, we are only getting around 1.3 mb/s download speeds.  The ISP says we'll send you a new modem, after doing all the troubleshooting, which does nothing.  Of course they never send it because they suck.

I'm considering just going out and buying a new one myself.  Is this as simple as plugging the new one in?  Do they have these at walmart?

you may have to get them to provision the modem, which basically means calling them and giving them some information so they can authorize it on their network.

Yes, just make sure that the modem you are getting lists your provider as compatible (shouldn't be an issue).  Also what speeds are you provisioned for already?  Do you know how far you are from the DSLAM?

Get like a netgear or dlink ADSL 2+ modem/wifi router combo or something.  I know when i did my parents cabin, centurylink has a website you can go to to provision it (connect.centurylink.com), I just needed to know the username and password... Your provider might be similar.
