I have an OEM Compaq DVD Model 114 but ever since I upgraded to XP Professional it is treated as a CD-ROM and it won't play any DVD.

MY CD-ROM is an CDRW but I can't get it to burn copies of anything either.

Anyone got links or suggestions other than shoot the day computer and be done with it?

Thanks,

Allen

Just a SWAG, whenever I get stgrainge things after an OS upgrade beyond what was factory installed, I look at these:

1. Upgrading device drivers (XP really shouldn't need this)
2. Upgrading device firmware (you may not know exactly who made the drive since it's a factory computer)
3. Flashing the BIOS

Usually works for me, ymmv.

Helldog40,

I tried XP device drivers but they did not have one for my DVD ROM.  So they have lumped into the CD ROM catagory and said forget about it. lol

I am pretty sure (not positive) that LG made the DVD ROM for Compaq buttttttt their updated driver would not download.  Getting the right one from HP is just not going to happen.  They don't even have my DVD-ROM listed on their website.

As to flashing the bios I haven't done that and am a little hesitant because I have never done it before and don't really care to risk a screw up on my part.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Allen

I don't think you update the drivers for the drive.  Its not that windows can't operate the drive or read the data from the drive, but it can't make sense of what it is reading.

My first guess it is it an "higherup" os issue.

When you put a DVD in the dvd drive is there any folders/file?  You dvd drive should have a bunch of VOB files.  if that is the case that would confirm my inital guess.

Or i'm a moron.
