I just had the hard drive replaced in my old Inspiron 5150, now the computer will not work with the internet and i'm too computer retarded to figure out why. I'm positive the computer is set up correctly to handle the internet. I using an ethernet cord hooked up directly to the modem.

But the link light on the modem keeps flashing orange and the internet doesn't work at all.

The computer i'm typing on now works just fine on the same modem when i switch the cord back to it. Is this something that i can correct or will i have to take it back to the computer shop and have the computer fixed again.

Did you get a power spike that knocked the HD out?

It may have zapped your network card, too.

no power spikes, i've already left the modem unplugged and plugged it back in and the link light still flashes

the drivers are updated, at this point i guess i'll just have to take it back and see if they know what  is wrong

my unspoken point was the ISP's DHCP probably is onyl giving you 1 ip address,m and it thinks the other computer has it, thus won't give your laptop an IP of its own.

That would be really weird if the (cable?  DSL?) modem would only connect to a specific MAC address.  None of the modems I've owned or used (Westell Wirespeed, ActionTec GT701, Motorola SB5100 & SB6120) had any provision for such a thing.

I'd sooner suspect a bad NIC on the computer than any nonsense from the modem, given that the modem does work with at least one other machine.
