Maybe it's the breed but my GSD HAS to be in the same room or in the hallway watching me at all times. If I'm on the couch she's lying right under me on the floor or less then 6 feet away on hers. Walk into another room and she's sticking her nose thru the door checking on me.

I've had breeds like GSD and Malamute mixes and they just want attention all the time but not line of sight fixated so much.

She'll happily wander outside but she still tends to keep a pretty close eye on me and if I'm working, she's a PITA because she has to get in the way unless it's nice and she can sleep on the grass watching me.

My last dog was a Catahoula Cur, totally opposite, hell of a watchdog but 30 seconds of getting petted and she was happy and off elsewhere, very independent attitude.

Heck, I can't even get up a 4 AM to hit the head without a damn dog head sticking thru the doorway.

I can't be the only one with a 4 legged shadow stalking me no matter what I do.

So let me get this straight..

You have somehow convinced your dog that you are the greatest human being to ever walk this earth and her sole purpose in life is to watch over you and be ready at a moment’s notice to sacrifice everything so that you may live.

Food, sleep, everything…. Comes second to your survival.

That’s Terrible!
I’m not sure how you carry on….

There are times when a man wants to be left alone to do his business and also realizes that a dogs sensitive nose could be ruined forever.

And it kind of sucks when you step on the floor and constantly sqish some part of your dog because it's underfoot. And when you are 75 pounds, underfoot covers a pretty big space on the floor. Heck, my foot is on the pooch right now and if I move it, she looks up and basically goes "WTF?"

If I’m reading between the lines here, you would prefer to be left alone when you poop.

I’ll have to agree on that one…

My ridgebacks are the same. The breed is supposed to be aloof in theory - that's how my last one was. My current two are glued to me and very unhappy when I go to the store and leave them at home.

Same with our Keeshonds. One is one foot in front of me, and the other is right here beside me, touching me as he chews a bone. But for them I think they are constantly hoping I'll produce food or a culinary treat.

That is a GSDs job. The male is the wife's shadow. The female is my shadow.
I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.

Mine is underfoot so much you have to be careful he doesn't trip you going down stairs.  He'll stand next to you on a landing and won't move until you do.  I usually try to prod him into going first, but that doesn't always work.

My senior female Lab lays on the rug next to the glass shower doors facing away from me while I'm in there.  No idea what that's about.  Otherwise she's pretty content after a few scratches or a treat and just finds a spot somewhere in the same room to lay down.

The Golden Retard on the other hand. . . MUST be in a position to trip you at all times.  Dog is about the same color as my hardwood floors so that doesn't help matters.  That dog annoys the hell out of me so I mostly ignore it.  Even with ignoring it it is totally infatuated with me.  Don't know what it is.

Mine doesn't do that but she'll lie against the wall going into the kitchen twist her head back and watch the door like a hawk. I actually got pretty lucky as she hasn't trashed or chewed a single thing since I got her at the pound.

Go into the backyard without her [major faux pas] and she'll find some window to watch the entire time. When mowing, it become a hoot, especially when cutting around the house sides. Dog face at back window, dog face at side window, dog face at front window, rinse and repeat.

Count these days as blessed, amigo.  The reason dogs pass away so soon is because they give us everything that they have to give, all the time.

You’re doing it wrong.
The Golden is infatuated with you because you are ignoring it.

Try this.. start giving it more attention, a lot of attention.
When it’s satisfied that you are in the game and engaged, they will be happy and wander off and relax.

The worst outcome is that you get to pet a Golden more every day.. not exactly the end of the world.

All of them have differing personalities, but for my Ridgebacks they started to get the "have to be in the same area" thing going when they became elderly and ill. My current old girl is terminal with a nasty cancer, and she's glued to me, seemingly. Not a problem, she took care of her family throughout her life, now at the end of hers we'll support her as best we can.

I've tried this.  It just encourages her to mob me more.  I could do nothing but pet her for 8hrs straight and she'd still want more.  Stepping on my foot, leaning against my leg, mouthing my hand, nose boops to get my attention, and sometimes barking.  She was likely abused and found soaking wet and starved 1/2 to death left for dead on the side of a country road so I guess that's what really messed her up.  Now that I say that out loud again I'm going to make a concerted effort to be more tolerant of her.  . . she's been through a lot and just thinks I'm her savior.

My old GSD, Wolff, would lose his mind if we took him somewhere and anyone went into a store. I'd stay in the car with him, he'd be whining and freaking out until they came back. He liked to escort mom everywhere she went too. He NEEDS to protect!!!

That dude has eyes on everything.
Wife is taking a shit...lays at her feet.
Wife's in the shower...he's outside the curtain on the mat.
She's in her office he's there.

I lay in bed...he's gotta be on me.
Though lately after being gone for a week he changes up By sleeping in the hall. Back to our daughter's room, watching ours.

I try to
Kiss
Hug
Cuddle the wife
He will barge between us and bark.

He will drop a ball at my feet 8700 times and not wear out.

He will try and lay between my legs if I'm in the recliner.

The gsd/Dobie mix just lays around but she's 10.
But a cricket can fart at 235am. And she will start barking like someone is beaking down the door.

You are a good man for saving her.
If she could talk , she would thank you directly.

Since she can’t, the only way she can express her gratitude is through being close.
She considers her watchfulness a valuable commodity to pay you back for your efforts to save her.
Honestly, it’s the only currency she has.

I would consider that high praise, indeed…
