When "Das Boot" first played in the US back in '81, was it German audio with English subtitles or the dubbed English audio version?

Movies with subtitles are pretentious and IMO DISTRACT from the movie.
You can't see the actors face and reactions when your eyes are glued to the bottom of the screen. Imagine while you are watching a movie a tiny little animated character at the bottom of the screen keeps doing funny things that keep your attention distracted while you watch the film.............annoying? YES! In the age of DVDs there is no reason for that crap, it should have overdub in 20 languages! All the actors in Das Boot spoke english and did the over dub parts themselves so its not like you are hearing another actors voice. As long as the syncing looks good and you can't even tell its dubbed i don't see a problem. |

It is a VERY good film. I watched it in the original German, with subtitles, when it was initially released. I saw it again, when it was released in English. I enjoyed it both times. Given a choice, I prefer the English version, because reading subtitles IS a distraction from seeing all of whats going on in the film. |

I've never had a problem with subtitles, it just takes a fraction of a second to read. Not distracting in the least to me. In fact, I actually feel like I've been understanding their language for the duration of the movie if that makes any sense. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Can you imagine this Hitler scene in the movie Downfall with a bunch of overdubs of the Nazis speaking English with a British accent? IMO the original language adds greatly to the experience when watching the film. Video |

Mike - is your avatar what they're using in Germany now, or an old plate? I still have mine from '88-'90 (makes me feel old) and they just said "USA" down the middle between the letters. Red Army Faction was still active at the time, they blew up a couple of USO's just before I got there, so shortly before I left they started putting a black strip across the top and bottom of the plates to make them look the same height as European plates, but still the same shape - you can't disguise an American NATO plate, especially since they still said "USA" on them. Idiotic. |

Stationed in Germany '88-'90 we had a lot of German WWII vets in our town who would come drink with us when they'd see us at the local bars. No animosity, they were friendly as hell, would buy us beers and loved to talk about the war. No bragging or gloating, just matter of fact kind of stuff about what it was like. They treated us with respect and we returned it, was a nice change from listening to young idealistic German kids spewing all their anti-American "Ami's go home!" BS. One of my favorites had been a U-Boat commander, we saw him almost every weekend. He brought in a photo album one night with some great photos of his boat, crew, the open sea, some of the ships they attacked, their port, etc. It was fascinating listening to him talk, he was sharing a significant piece of history that few survived. Combined with the setting - our town (Budingen) was over 1400 years old and the bar was over 500 years old, wooden beams and clay, sitting at a beat up old table getting drunk on Asbach and Heffeweisen listening to this old German talk about his U-Boat....it was surreal. He was proud to say he surfaced just to see the coast of the US with his own eyes, wanted to ground his boat and surrender. They'd heard rumors German POW's in the US were allowed to work on farms and were well treated. They patrolled the east coast of the US then went to South America. When the war ended they didn't know if it was safe to show their faces to get fuel to go home. He said he was glad Hitler was gone, talked about how decimated Germany was when he got home and it took years for their economy to recover, and was thankful the US stayed and helped rebuild. |

I agree that subtitles are distracting and don't really convey the emotion of the actor, and aren't always accurate, but there are some great movies made overseas that are worth watching and making the effort. Funny thing - I watched dozens of movies in Germany with no subtitles (I don't know how they directed the signal, but 1/2 mile from base we couldn't pick up Armed Forces Network so could only get German TV). I learned just enough German to get by, so had to follow the movies just by following the action and watching the emotions of the actors. It gave me a whole new perception of cinematography, it was great. I couldn't stay awake for their "dramas", but action movies and comedies were fun to watch. And beer, lots of beer. Definitely needed beer. Watching the original black-and-white King Kong dubbed in German actually made it a better movie - German is such a harsh sounding language it gave the movie a much different perspective, reminded me of the Nazi's in Indiana Jones. If only Indy came to King Kongs rescue.....for the girl, that is.

I find it nearly impossible to read the subtitles and watch the actors at the same time.
The chubby officer (maybe the navigator) has the most annoying voice ever in the english dubbed version. Everybody needs to watch one movie in their life where you gotta root for the Nazi's.

But I do admit, after the first couple minutes, I don't even notice the subtitles, the words just are read subconsciously. But in the age of DVD, you can still have your dub and hide the captions. BTW, if you get a chance, see the movie in a theatre on a big screen. Even though I was in a 200 seat theatre I still felt claustraphobic. |

Yep. Remember "The Blue Max" with George Peppard ("The A-Team") playing a German WWI ace, speaking English with no trace of a German accent whatsoever? Remember "All Quiet On The Western Front" (the first one), with German soldiers speaking American English? 
There are very few films that have decent dubs in English. Personally, I cannot name one. You may as well live with subtitles, because the original foreign language version is usually the best. Edit: try watching Full Metal Jacket on DVD with the French language track. You think English language dubs are bad? You'll never knock subtitles again. |
| i can agree that looking up and down the screen you might miss a bit, but at the same time, the language is just more powerful in its original. i always watch kung fu movies in mandarin or samurai movies in japanese. same thing with das boot, which i watch about once a year. |

It was originally a muuuch longer, multi-part film made for West German TV. I saw it when there. It was controversial among Germans, to say the least. It's a good film. The book's author, Lothar-Guenter Buchheim said it had its problems, but overall, it caught the flavor of the times and what these guys went through, dying for nothing. |

| Zum ersten Mal wurde es im Kino in OmU herausgegeben. Dann kam das Video. Heute hat man die Wahl den Film in Orignalsprache oder in eine andere Sprache uebersetzt worden sehen. Mir ist es absolut egal, weil ich Deutsch fliessend sprechen, schreiben und lesen kann. Die anderen hier, die Untertiteln als hochtrabend halten, sollen eine Fremdsprache lernen. Einsprachigkeit ist doch heilbar...Dummheit leider nicht. |
