[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Dash Cams... (Page 1 of 2)

The Surrounded by Bikers thread got me thinking, and wondering if having video evidence of having to protect myself would be a good thing so things don't turn into a he said/she said contest.

I started looking at dash cams on Amazon, but it is a little overwhelming at how many different options there are.

What is the best cam that I can get in the $200 range?

Amazon Product
  • 1080P FHD resolution @ 30fps. The V1 is notable for pristine video quality. The branded design is discrete and exclusively offered by Rexing. The camera mounts to the windshield, staying concealed from outside the car.
  • Wide Dynamic Range allows camera to perform optimally in low light situations. The WDR technology will automatically adjust the exposure of the camera to create balanced images and footage.Lens: 170 degree 6 layers glass lens captures a sweeping view of the road. The ultra-wide lens technology is scarcely available on our competitors dash cams.Loop recording feature. Set it and forget it.
  • 128GB Memory Card Support(Not include). With loop recording enabled, users will have the option to record videos in loops of 3, 5, or 10minute video files.

I've got one of these in both vehicles and have been really happy with it. No problems with either in about a year and a half.

I get tired of plugging mine into and out of the cig outlet. And the wire hanging down from the window. I'll tag this thread for more information.

A) get a hardware kit
B) get a camera with a capacitor not a battery

I have this exact dash cam. There is a version that you can put a rear facing one in.

18 months in and it works great.

Maybe I'm stupid - I'm on a budget, and wanted one for a long time, but not I'm holding out for one that points both front and rear - with a clear picture... which means waiting some more for the funds.

Dumb question, buy why not leave it plugged it? I remember watching a video of a guy experimenting with how long it took his dashcam to affect the functioning of his car's battery, and I think it was a loooong time.

Mine is by Armorall (Yes that one) and it was around $20.  Used microSD and takes 15 min clips and will run for about 30 min after car turns off.  Works good enough.

Here's the one I bought. I went through three different brands models before finding this one. Got it on sale for $129. Keep an eye out for a sale. Produces very high quality video and has worked flawlessly. Let's you embed your plate number and speed into the video. Includes a GPS receiver for speed tracking.

Amazon Product
  • 2.19MP Sony Exmor CMOS sensor with 140-degree viewing angle
  • 2.7" LCD viewfinder allows easy video streaming and Device configuration
  • Internal GPS tracker enables speed and Red light Camera alerts

So I went with this. It's a little above your price point, but I really like it.

Many people go with the BlackVue. Those are great dashcams, but I greatly prefer having an LCD screen on my camera. If I'm involved in an accident, I can immediately show the responding officer I wasn't at fault. I can review footage on the fly. Setting up the proper angle and ensuring the camera is recording is easier, etc.

The bundle I linked also includes a rear-facing camera. That's very important to me. If someone in a road block/riot/road rage tries something, I want it on video.

Dash Cam - How to Hide Wires for Beginners

Have mine hardwired. Videos on the internet showing how to hide the cable.  Mine stays running all of the time, haven't had issues with car battery.  It will automatically save the clip if the car is jolted over a certain G-force.  It's a nice added insurance.

if you know how to use a soldering iron you can take the cig lighter adapter apart and wire two leads on the circuit board. Then attach the leads to switched power (with a inline fuse)

same idea as buying a fixed wire install kit but free

I have been really happy with my Lukas 7900 I've been running for the last few years.

He is a clip from the camera, I had a starter not engaging the fly wheel issue on past Ford. To give you an idea on on video quality.

Best for the price in my research, the tech is constantly updating. This model uses a capacitor not a battery, so it is not degraded by temperature change.

1440p and 60fps. Tiny.

Forgot to add, you can add a battery pack for the blackvue so it can have up to 12 hours of recording. You can also view it from your cell phone.

The reviews are pretty evenly split between great reviews or terrible.  They aren't ready yet for prime time.  But at a rate of $200 you can afford to get a pretty decent option.

That's my question too.  Can you hit a button to "save" the past 5 minutes or make a bookmark on a longer trip video?    Say something funny happens in front of you and you want to save that, then, an hour later you get in a fender bender.   How do you get both parts if it records in continual small loops?

At 1080P mine holds about two days worth of continuous video (it's always recording). Saving a few 5minute clips here and there isn't going to to hurt, and I keep a spare 32GB micro SD card in the truck in case I need it.

+1. I've been wanting a dash cam for a while, but the thought of another device cluttering my life and my car, and dealing with more wires and cables holds me back. I'm kind of burned out on technology and devices.

Thanks!   What's the biggest SD card that will take?  And, how does that lane departure alert work, or does it not work at all?   My kid could use that feature.

It records continuously as long as it has power.  It saves the recordings to the flash drive in X-minute increments.  So if it's set for ten minutes, one file will hold what the camera saw from 8:00 to 8:10.  The next file will hold from 8:10 to 8:20, and so on.  When there isn't enough room on the card to hold another file, it deletes the oldest one.  That way, you always have the last several hours of video on the card, depending on the card size.  I'd get 32-gig minimum.

If you see something you want to save, just hit the save button, and that file will be flagged so that it won't be overwritten, or just make sure you get it before the camera recycles it.  I would get a copy of it off the card asap, if it's from an accident, of course.

Just to add another reason that I went with the one I did is because when its installed right in fron kf the rear view mirror with the lens just below the black it is virtually invisible from the outside unless you are looking for it. Also it doesnt obstruct any if the windshield while driving.
