So, assume that the democrats and republicans pass a new debt ceiling increase with a bunch of spending cuts (lets say 500 billion).  When obama signs the law (or his autopen does), can't he just do a signing statement and saying the cuts are unacceptable/unenforceable etc?  Yes, I realize Congress has the purse, just wondering what he would try if all he could get with the debt limit increase were a bunch of cuts attached.

If I had to bet, I'd say that's exactly what will happen.

Cuts sometime in the distant future.

Mushy triggers.

Business as usual.

Then next year, we find ourselves with the same problem, but worse off

Irrelevant, since nobody really wants to cut spending.

Republicans, and some Democrats, want to look like they want to cut spending, but only because that's a "hot" issue right now.  When it comes down to it, they all have pet projects they don't want to see cut at all, and they're all willing to "compromise" and make bargains with everyone else to not cut their pet projects.

Any "spending cuts" will wind up exactly like what we had right before 'the government shut down" a couple of months ago... big-sounding numbers which, when examined, are all smoke and mirrors.

I do not think he can do that- I'm dredging up my old civics dlass from 40+ years ago but it was my understanding that POTUS has 3 options to a bill thathas gone through Congress- sign it into law, veto it or pocket veto it.

I do not believe he can strip out or otherwise screw with the bill itself. If the president wants something in it or not he has to do the arm twisting BEFORE the bill hits his desk.

If Obama had the ability to strip out thinsg he didnt like there have been a few pro-gun items attached to bills that he then signed into law- I would bet he would have happily stripped out those portions of the bill if he could.

"We" hasn't included the politicians up to this point.

If they merely yap about the problem and score points off of each other they continue to be re-elected, in the vast majority of races.

If they buckled down and addressed the problem they would piss off (?) percent of the electorate and risk having to do something honest for a living.

It will probably just have future spending cuts tied to some BS triggers that will be over-ridden once they are reached.

Just more debt heaped on the pile for the next generations

Personal responsibility left this country awhile back. The neighbor on the left robbed me so it's OK for me to rob the neighbor on the right

yeah, i know it was ruled unconstitutional... however, i'm just trying to think of ways he will *try* to make it work.
