Fork in the road for me. Decided I didn't want to go into law enforcement so a decision must be made.
33 years old Associates degree Crim Justice Living in Portland, OR Not an option for me: Computer fields Most trade jobs i.e. mechanic, welder, plumber, etc. Outdoor jobs If I don't figure out anything better then I'm going back to school and doing nursing. There has to be a perfect job out there. I'll never know every career option. There's so many. |

You should consider seeing a Career Counselor.
This is not a normal GD reply. Here's one of the tools we use to help people with stuff like this. http://www.self-directed-search.com/ Give it a half hour, it's certainly not going to hurt. |
| Become a Barber. Seriously. Work for yourself. It's a trade which generally only black men seem to be going into, and the old white guys that barber are retiring at an alarming rate. The reason I state between black and white is normally white men don't go to black barber shops and vice-versa. Can't beat a cash based business, especially if you're actually talented and make it a place where people want to be. |

I used to be an academic advisor.
My first question was always: "What do you do for fun? What do you do to relax?" This is where you START. From there you direct all your education, skill building, etc. toward that. (I also used to be a program director for a Criminal Justice AS program and all I got to say is, "Sorry." |

I love to fish, play horseshoes, and read. Does anyone pay for rednecks to redneck? |

Computers ![]() Thats a mighty big realm. What about computers? Fixing them? If so, fixing hardware or solving software issues? Playing games? If so, are you artistically inclined? If not, have you ever made up your own games? What about computers do you enjoy? (I mean, besides pron and reddit |
| I feel ya man. I'm in the same boat. I'm 33 and thinking about a career change as well. I'm thinking either going back to the military or going into law enforcement. Both are solid career's with good benefits. That or go back to school and try to get a better degree. |
|
Wow, 33 went to school, don't want to work in chosen academic field. List rules out a metric ton of fields.
I do not know you and don't want to come off mean, but you gotta buck up. I have worked jobs I didn't want, cause I had to earn money. That sucks if you must do it for a lifetime, but you are gonna have figure something out. Maybe sell insurance? Maybe hire a life coach? Good luck man. |

You've pretty much eliminated any options.
If you won't do a trade job and your AA is in Crim Justice, you may as well try for a 4 year in something outside of that. Real Estate is an option, I have several friends that don't have degrees that do very well in that. Other than that, you went to school for something you don't want to do, and you unwillingness to do trade jobs, makes alternatives tough. If you're in Portland you could try looking at startups, specifically Sales, it's possible to get a good career there without specific education. There's a decent industry there for that. |

My plan is to go back to school. There should be thousands of options. all the schooling in the world wont help if you have no idea which direction you want to go.. think of school as a car.. if you dont have directions or know which general direction you're heading.. you're never going to get to your destination.. |

My plan is to go back to school. There should be thousands of options. That changes things, your original post seemed to imply that you wanted something now, but if you couldn't find anything you'd go back to school for nursing (which is a great option BTW). If you're willing to go back to school to get a 4 year or equivalent (Nursing), then you open a lot more doors. Business gets you in a lot of places and is really a checkbox to get in, just make sure you have good grades if you want to do anything higher level. More complicated HR jobs are paying a decent amount now if you have access to a business program that focuses in that area. The hours are also pretty good. Nursing school is an awesome option and leaves a lot of future choices for advancement if you want to get more schooling. |

That's the key, you have to enjoy people. I'm 31. I work in the mining industry and frankly, it is soul sucking anymore. I've been at it for 6 years, and I'm considering attending a school in Pittsburgh. In PA, it's a 9.5 Month, 1250 Hour requirement to obtain a barbers license. A small amount of time which can lead to a relatively rewarding career and a lot of independence. I am completely detached from people in my field anymore and I miss the connection I had with people when I was in sales in previous jobs. I genuinely care about others and how they are doing. That is very important to me. I see a barber shop as a communal place, a forum if you will. Some folks enjoy that, others just want to come in and get a great haircut or a shave and that's fine too. All are welcome. Ever notice in a black community, they'll riot and burn the whole community to the ground, but the only things left will be a bodega and a barber shop. There is a reason for that. Interestingly enough, barbering is on the upswing. Big demand for "skilled" barbers and I don't use that term loosely. My current barber is booked 5 days a week 7A to 7P and is getting $20 a head. Cuts about 24 a day. He ain't hurtin'. |

I'm kind of in the same boat. I had a great career then got sidelined due to an incurable medical condition.
All the jobs I could do, or are trained to do, I am restricted from doing. I was medically reassigned to a nightmare of a job making a fraction of what I used to make. My time at work is miserable and so are my days off spent thinking about going back to the shithole. |
