Anyone ever use any decent deck design software?

I don't want it to generate a material list.....so I don't care at all about that aspect.  But If it will.....BONUS

I mainly want something that will help me tinker around with my ideas before I go to a pro.

I'd prefer something $40 or less, with decent 3D modeling, and a decent feature set to add a hot tub and pool.

Thanks

Simpson-StrongTie has a lot of good stuff on their web site.  It will certainly help you understand the structural design of your deck and how to tie it to the house.

Google, SKETCHUP, it's free, learn it, it will do just about anything you need.

I see your in MI,   Have you been to Menards?  They have a design it center that will give you a 3d rendering, give you the post, beam and framing layout  which you can adjust to accommodate a hot tub by adding the 80 PSF option,  and if you bring it to one of the guys at the building materials desk, will generate you a materials list.   I used to work there and used it A LOT.   If you have questions let me know.

As far as I know, that software is one of a kind and was specifically designed for them. I've had many people ask about it, but I could never find any answers on it.   A couple of things to note, if you use the "rotate" feature  your 3d design will print out at what ever rotation you selected.    Also, the joist an beam layout is usually 5 bucks,  but if you don't give it to the casher......she'll never know .   Remember they'll print you out the materials lists for free, so don't be shy with the designs you have because on the list it will tell you what they are using each part for, it's really helpful. And if you buy one you design, always get the estimate with material list for the same reason, cause once its on the invoice, you have no idea what they are using the parts for. .   If you have questions, shoot me an IM, I've been out of there for about 4 years, but still remember the basics. .

I use chief architect, and they have both a homeowner version and a deck and landscape version that might suit your needs. see if you can find a demo, and usually you can buy older versions on amazon with a serious discount.

We use decktools 3.0, it's about 2 grand or so but we do this for a living, and I split the cost with a few other contractors in the area.
