Count me as another one who liked them up to and including Violator. Everything afterwards was a gradual slide into mediocrity. Playing the Angel was a decent pullback but it just didn't have the staying power their old stuff has.
I always saw Depeche Mode like New Order and Tears for Fears... they all started out really good but with each successive album they got weaker and weaker until they became more or less a cover band version of their previous selves. The same can be said for a lot of bands... it is a rare thing for a band to last decades with the same intensity and quality that they had during their peak years. Prime example: U2. Came out of the gate hard, just kept getting better until the 90s when they became more or less a wedding band desperately trying to recapture their former sound and glory. The only difference between Depeche Mode and U2 is that one still has legions of middle aged zombie fans worldwide who will buy and love any old crap they put out, and the other is Depeche Mode. |

Saw them at the Palladium in Hollywood back in the early 80s. I think Vince Clarke was still with them. Took my little sister. I was in college radio from 80-84, so they were a big part of my repertoire. I have most of their offerings on LP and they qualify as a 'great band' IMO.
I have still a bunch of B&W prints that I took at that show and I think that The Thompson Twins opened for them, but don't quote me on it. Chris |

The techno thing is off putting for many.
An interesting point of Depeche Mode. They are one of the most covered bands ever. Very good lyrics and melody arrangements. When Johnny Cash, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and many, many others are covering your songs, you must be doing something right. |

Good points...each person has their own view. Respectfully, IMHO I reverse the U2 and DM positions in your opinion. IMHO U2 began to slide after The Unforgettable Fire. I was a fierce U2 fan until the release of Joshua Tree. U2 took off commercially at that point, though...so what do I know? According to their critics, DM did have a lull in their quality while the lead singer, Gahan, cleaned up from heroin addiction...and about that same time a key contributor to their sound, Alan Wilder. Meh...its only music...

The best concert I ever saw in terms of quality of music was the Depeche Mode/OMD show in 1988.
OMD was supporting their Best of CD (which by the way, is amazing, on par with Pet Shop Boys Discography). Depeche Mode was supporting their Music for the Masses CD. WIthout question, one of the best concerts for 80's New Wave/Modern Rock I've ever seen. Even better than PIL/Sugarcubes/New Order. |

I saw the Sugarcubes nearly get booed off the stage opening for U2 on the ZooTV tour.

I remember seeing them that summer in Michigan, IIRC New Order,Echo & The Bunnymen and Art of Noise were there as well. |
