Jack was sitting on the plane when a guy took the seat beside him. The
guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, moaning in fear.
"What's the matter?" Jack asked.

"I've been transferred to Detroit , there's crazy people there. They've
got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public schools,
and the highest crime rate."

Jack replied, "I've lived in Detroit all my life.  It's not as bad as
the media says.  Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business,
enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe a place as
anywhere in the world."

The guy relaxed and stopped shaking and said, "Oh, thank you. I've been
worried to death. But if you live there and say it's OK, I'll take your
word for it.  What do you do for a living?"

"Me?" said Jack .  "I'm a tail gunner on a Budweiser truck."

A dead transvetite washes ashore on the Detroit river shot in the head 6 times.

One detective is taking notes of personal articles and clothing, while his Partner bags the artilces for evidence.

"One pair of stiletto pumps, neon green. One Brown leather purse, no wallet or cash, 3 Dildo's, one 18" Vibrator, six tubes of astroglide, Pictures of family, Cell phone, 4 syringes, elastic tubing, Bent spoon, Letter from the Aids clinic, One NAMBLA life member card, One Detroit Lions T-shirt, one butt plug, one set of falsies, one pair of crotchless pantys, 34 cents in change...That's it."
The detective then looks around and says, "The freak had family and this is going to be embarrasing for them, looks around, and then throws the Detroit Lions shirt in the river, and say's ("Scratch the shirt, no one needs to suffer more after this").

I resemble that remark, since I'm working EMS at the Lions preseason game Thursday.

Although I will say, the stadium itself (and Comerica Park next door) are really nice.

Downtown isn't bad at all. The problem is that Downtown is a fairly small block of incredibly policed tax-base, and you have to drive through Mogadishu to get there.

True. And you get pockets of not-terrible along Fort on the west side.

Detroit was SUCH a great city that even 35+ years of misrule and criminal mentality hasn't managed to destroy quite everything yet, but it seems like Kwame and Co. are working hard on finishing the job. Too bad.

Last summer I gave some collegueges who were visiting to do some training, a tour of the Detroit area. Two of the four were African-Americans, one from St.Louis and one from Denver.  The other guys were  from St. Louis and one from Dallas.

I showed them downtown,  around Comerica, Hockey Town, Greektown, Chilios, the river front, and a few other nice places in the city. We even went over to Windsor.  Finally, the black guy from St. Louis, who had grown up in East St. Louis, said,  "Ok, now show us the Detroit we all read and hear about."

I showed them mile after mile of burned out store fronts and houses. urban prairies, complete neighborhoods of squalor, poverty and ruin.  The older black guy from St.Louis said, "What the fuck is wrong with these people, i've never seen a city like this. It looks like some bombed out city in Iraq. Even the worst parts of East St. Louis don't look this bad."

"Well", I said, "its drugs, ignorance, poverty, or 'The Man' keeping them down. It may be the people that live here don't know any better so they don't have anything to compare it with."

"That's fucked up" he said. "I thought the hip-hop mayor was fixing things up."

"Yeah, well Kwame is the king of a third world kindom," I said, "what do you expect?"

Kwame is a douche, but the real damage was done during the Coleman Young years. Things were actually starting to turn around (slowly) until Kwame turned out to be just as corrupt.

Archer wasn't 'black enough' for City Council and voters of Detroit. The recall campaign against him, tacitly backed by the NAACP, was outrageous. No wonder he didn't run again after that.

Reminds me of that commercial for the World Series with Tommy Lasorda trying to get a disgruntlled baseball fan out of a tree and interested in the World Series.  Then he learns he's a Cubs fan.  Hilarity ensues.

I never felt unsafe downtown. I used to go to Greektown, the New Center Area and Comerica Park all the time.

It's the outlying parts of the city that are horrible. I wouldn't dream of stopping for a red light at Outer Drive and Van Dyke.

Nah, downtown isn't bad at all. Looks pretty nice actually.

Just like ANY city there are bad and good areas. However, Detroit has ALOT of bad areas.
