Did you ever play EverQuest? (Page 1 of 2)

I played when it came out and for several years afterwords. First game like that ever. Stopped playing when it became a giant hassle to find groups, even when in a guild due to my working hours. I hated logging into a game and waiting for a group so I could actually play the game. Now a game came out called Erenshor. It's a one player game based loosely off the idea of EQ. No hand holding, no maps, no little exclamation points over quest givers. Chat actually looks like regular EQ chat. Trade channels, Groups of NPCs running around questing and grouping up in dungeons. Getting random whispers about a piece of gear you're wearing. Been playing it for a little bit now and it's quite enjoyable like EQ was in the early days. Group up with some NPCs and they'll ask for loot when stuff drops, they don't break mezz. Healers are good at their jobs. Tank is good at their job. Honestly the weakest part of the group I have is me LOL. Breaking my own mezz too often. You can level as fast or as slow as you'd like and the group you hang with stays around the same level. They also do things while you're away and gear themselves up for the most part. Just something to check out if you miss that early EQ vibe. |

They were already in a group and said they'd come join my group as the group they were in was going badly. Seems they showed up and I did not notice them. They then ran off and began doing solo stuff. I invited again and they came to me and again I did not see them. They then ran off to do solo stuff again. I invited them again and they basically said "Piss off. You want to group up then you come to me!". Ran a few zones over and got my group formed and we proceeded to die many times due to my crappy CC play. I also learned it's better to auction stuff off rather than sell it to vendors. The auction house you can get a little more money than an item is worth. Also if you dig through the people selling stuff you can come across a few high level item sellers. |

I put in some work in EQ, played from day one after I moved from UO. . . . Great game. I was a Monk so my expected job was to pull mobs for the group. At one point i fucked up feign death and got killed in a really really bad area and had to spend weeks just to get my shit back. Fun fact, I would farm ruby armor and lizardscale stuff and sell it on Ebay back when you could do that. I was young at the time and I recall my parents being incredibly confused when I had envelopes with checks being sent to the house for hundreds of dollars each. I have bad memories of long camps

| I went to college in the early 2000s. We called it EverCrack. Watched alot of students get addicted to it and flunk out. In a very small college and dormitory of only 120 students (total at the college) you got to know everyones faces. But then there'd be a power outage and you would suddenly meet a few more you had never seen before. |

I used to spend the night every weekend or so at my buddy's house. He got into everquest. Then when I'd go over, he'd just spend 8 hours sitting there walking through the forest. I never got the allure of it. The graphics weren't even good. He got sucked into it. Spent thousands of hours of his life farting in his chair, making his little character walk through the woods. Years later, I guess it finally got old and he gave it up. |

Played it from the first night it went live (out of Beta) to 2002 or so. Ah the days of harassing passing Druids to cast Spirit of The Wolf on you so you could run from Kelethin to Qeynos without getting ganked by mobs. Fippy Darkpaw fell before my wrath, many times. |

I was a Barb warrior. I was so new to computer gaming like this that I spawned in in Halas and could not see a damn thing. I was running into walls until another player stopped me and explained to me about Gamma. I can still hear the gnolls yapping in Blackburrow and the sound of dinging! The excitement of hitting level 20 so you can pick a last name. Raids with 74 other people. Green con mobs that can still one shot you even when you are 40 levels higher than them. |

When mains and alts were kitted out, we'd sell the non-transferable drops in channel during raids. Call somebody in, take their plat, and let them loot whatever the item was. Masters and plat sold on playerauctions. Got a paypal deposit the first of the month from the guild's quartermaster. EQ and EQ2 were great when the world was populated. Lately, can't even stomach it. Once a year or so I'll try again for a couple weeks and quickly tire of it. Really wish they'd do an updated version of the game that would draw people back. Make it like the original EQ, corpse recoveries and such. I just don't know if the current generation could stomach that lack of instant gratification. |

We were in Plane of Time when WoW came out. Half our guild left. We got stuck starting over in Planes of Power to get all the new folks keyed and geared up just to get back to where we were. My roommate started playing EQ in 1999 around the time Still D.R.E. came out (I remember things by where I lived and/or songs and movies). I wasn't into PC games at the time though. I'd been getting online since 96-97 on my parent's PC but in 2000 I bought my first PC, shortly after Kunark was released. I got the computer and game at Circuit City and really got into it. Back then it was $9.89 per month when it was developed by 989 studios. People would tell me I was insane to pay monthly to pay a game. Sadly they were right and 25 years later we live in subscription Hell. I got way too into it and played exclusively for 8 years. I missed a lot of other media due to this game. I got to play in a couple top guilds and got to experience the high-end levels of the game. It was so fun and it was the game I was searching for all my life at that point. I was super into tradeskills and was really into the merchant aspect of the game. AT THE TIME I was one of only a few people on the server who could craft a Quad-A (Ambleshift's Amazing Automated Amalgamator) and would sell them for like $500K Plat. I don't even remember what it was for (for a end-game raid zone or item?). At that time I had like $20MM platinum which was more than most end-game guilds held. I had a ton of other rare loot and all the cash and items were held on my Lvl 1 Bazaar mule. Well at some point after I quit they purged all those under Lvl 10. About a year ago I downloaded and logged in to find my Bazaar mules gone along with all my money and rare items. My characters had a few hundred K but many of my cool clicky items were gone. AoN RIP. I tried WoW in early 2008 a few months before I quit EQ for good and it was for noobs. All the 6-person or whatever "raids"? Fuck that we did raids with like 100 people (Plane of Earth, anyone?) The "corpse run" was a ghost not a real character. So many noob quests. Gay. I really miss EQ and to this day I still judge games against it, but it really was kind of addictive and unhealthy. |

I spent years in that game. It will always be the standard to me. I'd love a solid reboot except not quite as hardcore due to time constraints. Seems like a no brainer. I started out on E. Marr, but switched to E'ci shortly thereafter with friends and wound up in a big raiding guild called Souls of the Shadow. There was some rival guild we always raced to kill Vox and Naggy and that resulted in a shitload of server drama. Our guild wound up getting disbanded by GMs later on due to some circumstances that started with my RL friend inadvertently training Venril Sathir on the rival guild, LOL. We just reformed under a different name and kept going. Good times. I played a necro which was pretty powerful but nobody wanted them for groups. |

Played on Prexus before all the server merges. Have played on several TLP launches up through Omens of War. Its where I usually hit burnout. I do missing playing the game, but even the TLP reboots have drifted so far from what the game was it's no longer fun for me. I've not played for a couple of years now. Mangler was the last big TLP run I did. |

I played a ton when I was a kid. My parents would always tell me to turn off the pc and go to bed. I'd wait until they fell asleep to get back on and play. I still remember the night they turned on the bazaar feature and allowed players to go into vendor mode. I stayed up until 3am on a school night thinking it was the coolest feature ever. We all know the bazaar killed the EC tunnel, looking back things like hanging out in EC tunnel all day are what made EQ unique. There was a private server up I tried recently that had tri-classing and was fun for a nostalgia kick. But they're getting sued and the server is shutting down any day now. |

Made an alt on Erenshor this evening. Seems there is no gear minimum requirements. So I had a level 2 toon with almost 1000hp's and 500 mana. Funniest thing was the NPC's I normally group with on my main character kept sending me tells that I need to get on my main so we can go farm some XP. |

Wtb sow  I probably played that game more than any ever before or since. Thousands of hours…We were pretty exclusive for a few years. So many good memories and people. Finally getting in that lower guk group and that’s the moment you start getting spammed with people wanting TPs… Lockjaw in Oasis murdering people The first time the entirety of WC ganged up on the griffin and we all died horribly. Forget the name of the zone (the janky haunted house with undead) but friend and I would just sit at zone and wait for the inevitable trains and help out the newbs to clear the house. |

I started life as a barb warrior and my friend started a barb shammy. I always had SoW and a healer. We used to talk on the phone while playing. Met a level 30 mage when I was level 8 or so and she gave me a full set of bronze and walked me to Freeport from Halas. Talk about a scary trip as she tells me about things to watch for in the zones. Big red con spiders in the Karanas. Orcs in High Hold stomping the snot outta everything. Then came Kithicor. I asked why we were waiting and she said for daylight. I was like damn a level 30 is afraid of going into Kith at night!! That was back when someone in their 30-40's was a high level. Joined my friend's casual guild and we got into raiding. But with turnover we could never get far. Seems we were known as a "training guild". In other words, we train folks how to raid and then they get poached by other larger raiding guilds. I finally moved on to the #3 raiding guild on the server, New Dawn Rising on Torvonnilous. Stayed there till around 2005-2006 when I just got burned out. Moved on to more time spent with WWII Online and then on to WoW around 2008. Played WoW till around 2012 or so. |

It and EQ2. I still get the desire to log into EQ2 a couple times for a year, run around, shake the dust off. It's still a fun game, and now-a-days it is extremely solo friendly. Every few expansions, you usually will get a free Max Level Boost, so I keep my Main maxxed out, currently a Level 130 Necro. I set up my wife and daughter with accounts, and they'll hop on with me and we'll power through some zone, since I can 'mentor' them with my main. In other words, I run around One Shotting entire groups of mobs, and they rake in a ton of easy XP! Speaking of looking for groups: I did even install and log into EQ a long time ago, for my character's 20th 'birthday'. She was where I left her all those years ago, standing at the zone entrance of the Desert of Southern Ro, shouting 'Female DE rogue, LFG Orc Hwy' (you had to mention you were a female dark elf, cause they wore those ass-less pants that got everybody all hot-n-bothered! )I was actually a tad disappointed in the graphics. They've been upgraded! It doesn't look as 'good' as EQ2, but it's not the old blocky Playstation looking 2001 era graphics I remembered! LoL. But yeah, I dig me some fantasy MMORPGs! I should fire up elder scrolls online. It has that 'EQ' feel. As far as recapturing that old school feel though: Nah. I don't like endless grinds, don't have the time any more. And, while my ranger and rogue both made good money doing 'corpse runs', that's a very outdated and tbh, 'negative game play experience'. I need my games to be more solo friendly, and be able to accomplish things in an hour or two. Not have to block out a weekend to get a weapon or something. (Goes for the shooters and flight sims as well. I don't want to have to join guild/squad just to be able to play! Or try to make rando PuGs work...) |

Oh, wait a minute, I just re-read the OP, and you're talking about a Single Player game? With intelligent bots and simulated other players? Oh....well, yeah I might have to check that out then. Oh, it has a demo! Nice, downloading now... |
