Transcript is below.  My friend posted the main topic on Facebook.  The first response is a friend of his (not mutual as I have never met her).  He is a producer for a TV network.  She is an News Anchor at a different station.

Basically, I read the first response to his original post and just saw red with the "I Pack Heat" comment from this lady.  I maybe wrong and overreacted, but that is douche bag comment where I'm from and then proceeded with her comment on AR's.  You can read my comments below.  I am truly asking for candid feedback since I am constantly reminded you "can't read tone of voice on the internet."

I am debating a general apology for the personal attack even though I do believe the premise of my argument is valid.

Thoughts?

Again…back from vacation and climbing onto my soapbox: I disagree with some of the national media and believe now is a good time to have a discussion about guns. Now let me preface this by saying, I’m not a far lefty and I’m not a far righty…I’m for whoever makes my life far better. So again…I believe we should be having a “discussion” about guns. I fully agree with the 2nd Amendment that every American has the right to bear arms…but I do think we should “discuss” what kind of arms the American public has in its reach. I’m not trying to start a damn political war on my Facebook page; I just think we as Americans should “discuss” this issue, no matter which side of the fence you stand. I truly believe both sides *could* come to an agreement if they take the time to listen to what the other is saying instead of just dismissing it & screaming at the top of their lungs about some political agenda. And if you’ve noticed I’ve put quotation marks beside the word “discussion” because a lot of times it turns out to be an all out brawl that usually has nothing to do with the topic at hand. So, the topic at hand is this, should Americans try and limit just some of the types of guns available in this country? Off my soapbox.

Friend’s News Anchor Friend
Dude you are so right. I pack heat but there is no reason assault weapons should be legal. None.

ME
So much for that open minded discussion ... The first post is the reason why things gets so heated. Chip is in the shoulder just begging someone to knock it off. Jeez.

Friend of Friend
Let me say this - guns didn't kill all those people in Colorado, the crazy guy with red hair did.

News Anchor Friend
Dude ... Since you are clearly annoyed about something why don't you add constructively to the discussion, as our good friend Josh requested, instead of making a really pointless statement?

ME
My point is from reading your first post you are closed minded and not willing to discuss. You start out saying "I pack heat" which I guess makes you think you are then qualified to make broad decisions on gun control by saying that "no reason assault weapons should be legal. None.". It reminds me of someone saying I have tons of black friends so I can comment on ...

Just because you don't own or want to own those weapons don't try and infringe on others rights to do so. I don't drink. I don't go around saying that we need to revert to prohibition. Of which, alcohol sure has killed a lot of people. Because some whack job (remember that is what he is) used a gun on a rampage, don't spout off saying some ill informed knee jerk reaction. I am willing to discuss but FB is not the place. I also don't go in with a closed mind as your first post came off. If guns are responsible for killing people, then maybe you can sue Facebook for allowing your words to make you come across arrogant and closed to reasonable discussion.

News Anchor Friend
Wow. You've got some issues dude. Take your meds. Josh so much for the discussion you were counting on with angry people like Mr. Smith here. I won't even waste time going down his emotional rabbit hole. As for the issue you raise, Josh, it is a good one and definitely something worth talking about.

Friends Mom
We have unfortunately become a country where we cannot disagree without being disagreeable and it will be a disaster if we don't fix that. DISCUSSION...the sharing of ideas in a calm and reasonable manner with respect for another's decision. We are quickly becoming a country that only respects what agrees with me. I am not taking sides, I DO have an opinion but its not relevant to the post. The post was about DISCUSSION...America learn to disagree with being disagreeable. Nuff said

Might be a good idea to at least let them know the history of the "assault weapon" term, the fact that they are functionally identical to hunting rifles, and that it's all cosmetics. They may genuinely not know. If they keep on after a rational discussion, and don't listen or do research, then call them on it.

Kinda what I was thinking the whole time, well that and the fact that both of his responses had zero to do with the issue and added personal insults to the bracket by suggesting the OP needs meds

It sucks to have friends growing up and then have them turn out to be the enemy.
As soon as his pal mentioned assault weapons....that dictated the tone and direction of the "discussion" and you lost....not to us, but to his ilk...

What is assault?
It is an action, a verb....
It is not a firearm....
I personally resent the term "assault" used in describing a firearm...It is a verbal tool used by the left to conjure fear of an otherwise common semi-auto loading sporting firearm...
....of course we could argue that I used my rifle to assault a bunch paper targets that were just minding their own business in front of the sand berm backstop...

If you commit an assault with a baseball bat....is it now an assault bat?

From here on out; when talking to lefties; call any object that has been used in the commission of a violent crime, assault (whatever).
Maybe someone will finally see the ridiculousness of it all.

OP, read it from the other direction.  Say the FB Friend was posting about support FOR assault weapons instead of AGAINST them.  And that all the responses are similarly flipped ethically.

Do you really think you would be persuaded by the statements that "you" made in that discussion?  Damned few others were persuasive either, except maybe the initial guy who started it.

He's the only one who sounds educated.

Don't tell me what I can and cannot buy, and I won't tell you.

eta: Also, the question posed by the FB OP is nonsensical. Firearm ownership is already restricted.

I would normally agree to this.  I hardly post on there at all, but my buddy and I do give each other crap on there for football and such.  I normally just let things pass and keep my mouth shut, but as stated, the "I pack heat" comment just didn't sit well with me.

Hell, I think you can probably tell with my post count here that I just let things go.  I've been a member here for awhile, but I guess I follow the "winning an argument on the internet is like the special olympics..." comment above.

You did fine, very reasonable pointing out the obvious - there can be no discussion on guns per se, doesn't need to be a discussion as it's about inalienable rights, not guns.

One of my main problems with the idea of this discussion is the veiled insinuation that an inanimate object (a gun) is responsible for this massacre and not the shooter.

Your reaction was actually a well thought out argument, which is why they dismissed you as be crazy, because you actually know what your talking about.

The biggest part of the discussion, is the VAST amount of disinformation on the left, and they will not let you actually explain the specifics, and if you they  they still wont believe you or correct themselves.

I got suckered into a similar debate with one of my former HS teachers, on his FB wall.  I was shitting on his face with facts, and he was coming back with emotion-filled verbal diarrhea.  I had to quit once he said "Well I bet Mexico would sure appreciate it if we tightened up our gun laws and stop letting guns from the US litter their streets".  You can't have a logical discussion with people like that, so there's no point.

One thing I've learned over the years is that the chances of changing an anti's mind on the issue of guns is about as good as hitting the lotto.  I don't even bother anymore, unless I know for sure that they're looking for real info on the issue, and not just looking to spout inaccurate bullshit.

The anchor friend made a strong comment.  You escalated.  Now everyone is firmly in their corner not listening to the other side because they are RIGHT.  If you want people to see the world from your perspective, you'd be better served with kind words coupled with fact and logic.

The only reasonable response was the mom at the end.

It's hard to discern sarcasm in typed for with out some sort of sign, and certain things can be taken out of context.  But that guy, fuck that guy.  If he was being sarcastic he should have said so in his second post, and then the intentional jab to get a response from you instead of taking his own advice and making another "really pointless statement."  While I understand your next post is in a calm tone and honestly not really an personal attack but more of a point, this douchebag doesn't.  He pulled the same tactic all liberals pull, suckered you into playing his game, made you look like a gun crazy lunatic, and is now taking the "high road."  Don't play his game and don't apologize, no matter what you do you're just going to make him look better.

The whole idea of debating/discussing types of guns is getting too far ahead of what should be discussed first. There needs to be a discussion about what the intent of the 2nd Amendment is. Many gun grabbers are quick to concede that they do not want to infringe upon someone's right to hunt or defend themselves.

That false premise needs to be slapped down quick every time it is mentioned. It's not about hunting, sports, or even self-defense...

The whole purpose the 2nd Amendment is to EMPOWER citizens so they can ensure that tyranny is kept in check. If there is agreement that 2A ensures that we (citizens) have the right to be empowered with arms sufficient to combat tyrannical forces... then and only then should we enter a debate about what kind of arms are adequate for that task.

If you don't agree with me, I'll accuse you of not being able to have a reasonable discussion about me taking away some more of your rights. Let's have a reasonable, civil discussion about me punching you in the face and stealing your car, how about that?

But seriously, this isn't the place for Facebook drama. Leave that crap over there.

The 50/50 split in America has been simmering a while. Since the 1980's. The middle ground is gone. It looks like the talking period may be coming to an end. Certainly the Dems are willing to disregard the will of a majority of others and ram legislation through when they can whether people want it or not.
