I am saving up to get an M1 from the CMP and I am trying to decide which one to get(Service or Correct Grade). I do not know anyone that has bought an M1 from them so I was wondering if you guys could explain the details of the different grades to me.

Thanks!

I don't know anything about the 'correct' grade ones, but the service grade ones I got a few years ago were beauties.  Changed out a handguard on one but other than that they were nice.  Wish they were still $100 less.

If you got the $$ get the correct grade.  There was a time when the non-Greek USGI rifles were coming in you could get a service grade and many times they were all correct as the grading criteria at the time was for ME and TE.  They added more criteria and a better break down of the rifles.   I wish I would have bought a collector grade when they had them.  But I have a few really nice USGI service grades that have pristine barrles and thats where it counts, Im lucky to have recieved the last of the non-Greek guns under the old grading system.

I got a Service Grade Springfield Armory that was fantastic.

If Service Grade is the same today as from 2004 era, you will not be disappointed.

That is the question, is it the same?

bought a collector grade years ago before prices got insane. In all honesty it does not "look" much better than a service grade ie, minor dings and dents on the wood.

But i wanted more than just a shooter.

Just get the service grade. All of the have been arsenal overhauled by now so you'll never get one with all matching parts.

After you clean it up and steam the dents out of the wood it will look better than the more expensive one anyway.

Go find the gun pron thread from a few nights back.  The Garand I posted there is an H&R Service Grade I received back in March.  You can also search GD for my thread "US Rifle, Cal 30, M1 Garand (aka why I love the CMP)" or something like that.  Pics there.  My gun is gorgeous.

I'd post pics but I'm at work.
