My sister had her first baby about a week and a half ago, both mommy and baby doing fine. My brother in law is a great guy, helps her in anyway he can. So I would like to buy them a digital camera for Christmas. Can you guys recommend some cameras?

thanks

Sounds strange coming from a Nikon guy like me:

Just saw a very good deal at B&H photo, an Olympus E500 Evolt + 2 lens and CF card for less than $750.  Add a external flash, you are ready to rock.

To catch those special moment, you really need a DSLR instead of a P&S due to the shutter lag.  I have talked with lots of parients complaining by the time they have the camera ready, the red-eye flash does whatever pre-flasses it does, and the shutter response, those "kodak" moment are gone.  Setup your DSLR with a external flash, bounce it off the ceiling, and forget about the stupid red eye reduction flash BS.

Other options are Nikon D50 (there is a rumor of a cheaper D40 coming) and the Canon Rebel.

Congrats!

As for the camera, try and find out what they would like it to do, specifically.

eg: take pics AND movies or just pics.

this is the one I have, its about the size of a deck of cards:

I'd have to recommend the Canons' Powershot line. I have the A80, it's a few years old, always excellent pictures and easy to use. If I were to get a new camera, it would be a Canon with a bigger screen, mine is too small.

I was planning on upgrading from my current Sony DSC-H5 this January. Had my heart set on the Canon EOS-30D and a good 18-70 lense. But right now, with the elections going the way they did... I may continue to wring-out my Sony for another year or two and get another AR and a bunch more ammo instead.

I hear you, and feel sorry for you.  I live in Kalifornia, and I have nothing I can buy anyway.

The H5 is a pretty good camera, but the same problem exist with all the digital, advanced digital, and P&S camera, shutter lag, or should I say, lack of a shutter.  The EOS-30D and 18-70L f/4 is a pretty OKAY combo, but I preferr the D200 (which I use).  I have shot the 30D and find myself much preferring the Nikon offer much better.  The 30D had only one advantage over the D200, it it can be useful at ISO-3200 (low light).

Yeah, I love the Sony, but shutter lag drives me CRAZY!!!!

I agonized over the choice between the Canon and the Nikon D200, but in the end I had to go Canon. My bro has a 20D that he's wrung-out and has good lenses for it. This whole choosing a lense platform drives me crazy. Cause once you're locked-in, you're stuck. So I had to go Canon. But the Nikon was tempting. I trust Canon just a little more in the digital realm based on a lot of feedback from pro's and semi-pro's.

Both Canon and Nikon produce great DSLR line, some how it is a line where most manufacturers tend not to be cheap.

It is more than just lens when choosing a camera platform, just like choosing a gun based on caliber alone.  Financial reason, yes, but there are others like handling and others.

Whatever your choices are, I hope you luck and would be able to save enough money to buy both firearms and camera.

I personnelly believe that the 2nd admenment cause was not hurt last night, and there are too many chicken little running around.  Look, I have weathered 8 years of Klinton, with the first 2 years the Dem are in control, and when they assault the second with the Crime Bill, the people reacted.  I personnelly think it is a good thing the Dem took over the House and Senate, because it forces the Rep to rethink what they did wrong (it is the war & corruption, stupid), and it restore some check and balance in the government.

Oh well, I did it, I mix the election into other topics.
