My dad and I are looking to buy a digital camera.  It will be for my 18th birthday (they said no guns for my 18th so Ill prob get this instead) so will be of better quality.  My dad has been looking for a good digicam too so he MIGHT get one for himself too, or he will use the one im getting, as i dont really care if he uses it or not.

We are currently looking at the Sony DSC F828 and the Nikon D70 SLR.  He has proposed that I get one of them and I prefer the Sony, as its more fun and the D70 is basically an upgraded version of my current Nikon F65.  The Sony doesnt need multiple lenses and has "funner" stuff but the D70 is more professional.

Can anyone reccomend me which to get or any alternatives?

Im trying to convince him to get both

I was a Sony guy for a long time.  I started with the Sony CD-1000, then the DSC-S85, then the DSC-F707.  I liked them all.  But I got tired of the dirty images I'd get out of them.  So I finally made the leap to Digital SLRs and got a Canon 10D, which is an amazing camera, but is much more than most people need in a camera.

The F828 has some dramatic improvements over the previous models like the F707 and the F717.  It has higher quality lens glass, which is great, because you could have a 20megapixel image sensor in the camera but if you have crappy glass, it won't make the slightest difference.  Also, it has a different image sensor than the previous models, which should help with the dirty image problem I was having.  But I don't know for sure, never having seen any results from the camera.  Another big improvement is the mechanical zoom, not electric.  Electric zoom is ok, but once you use mechanical you realize how slow the electric is, as I'm sure you've noticed using your Nikon.  There are several other improvements too on the F828.  I'm a Canon guy, so I can't really comment on the Nikon as I don't know much about it.

If you want a really detailed review of the Sony, as well as its specs, check out this link:

So I'd go with the Sony.  Hope it helps.
