Can I throw it in the garbage or do I have to take it to some fancy recycling center?  I figure that the battery might not be allowed, but what about the rest of it?

The mobo got fried.  I already pulled the HDDs.  Plus it's a 5yr old laptop.

If you're in the right neighborhood just leave it curb side with a free sign

Or if you have a recycling container put it in there

No recycling container.  I don't believe in it.  Plus I believe you have to pay extra.

Pull the hard drive and smash it with a hammer.  Toss it and the rest.

If you can't figure out how to pull the hard drive, figure out where it is in the laptop and just hammer there extra-hard.

Take it to a small computer place. They usually take old broken computers/computer bits and recycle them for free.

I use Gazelle.com, and just keep the "not worth anything" stuff around until I can combine it with something they pay for.  That makes the shipping free, and I get a check in the mail shortly.  My last one was for $80+, which is no big deal but better than throwing away old cell phones and cameras and cords and chargers and such.

I've never used them for a laptop, but see that they do list them on their website.

I did mention the $80 check for my last electronic recycling box, right?  If you want a cool target, buy some Tannerite with the $80

It's surprising what out of date, broken laptops are worth on Ebay-particularly if it was a popular model. People buy them all the time for the parts-TFTs, keyboards, optical drives etc. When it becomes difficult to find factory replacement parts many people turn to the secondary market to keep their rigs running.

At work, my department makes a couple of extra grand every month selling our old equipment. Since this income is outside of my regular operating budget, our board of directors allows me to spend the proceeds as I choose. My techs love it, because the cash is typically used for merit bonuses, spiffs, new tools etc. It's great for morale when my guys get a couple of c-notes for busting their collective asses to meet a deadline, or get asked to come in on a holiday Last month I used some of the proceeds to buy a couple of Alienware gaming laptops that the guys use to play games after-hours or on their breaks.
