Report: More Bush criticism in Chicks documentary

02:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 13, 2006

From Staff and Wire Reports

A new documentary featuring the Dixie Chicks is not likely to help the Texas country trio win back fans alienated by the group’s 2003 criticism of President Bush, as it features more stinging invective from outspoken lead singer Natalie Maines.

AP
(From left) Dixie Chicks Emily Robison, Natalie Maines and Martie Maguire are the subjects of a new documentary. In Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing, Oscar-winning director Barbara Kopple traces the uproar the group has faced in the three years since Maines told a London concert crowd that the group was ashamed that Bush comes from their home state. The film premiered to a boisterous crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival Tuesday night, and kick-started a new round of Internet chatter about the group.

An Entertainment Weekly story said the two-hour film contains a scene where the Chicks watch a news report in which President Bush – asked about Maines’ comment - says the group is “free to speak their mind.”

After Bush said “freedom is a two-way street” and said the group “shouldn’t have their feelings hurt” by negative reaction and a drop in record sales, Maines repeated his words and said, “What a dumb f—k,” and then turned to the camera as if replying directly to the president and said, “You’re a dumb f—k,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

Officials with the Toronto festival - which also planned to screen Death of a President, a fake documentary by British filmmakers that simulates the assassination of President Bush - said Shut Up and Sing takes a long-term, realistic look at the band.

"It's a very human story about the dangers of speaking out in a so-called democracy, how problematic that becomes, and the reaction it elicits," said Piers Handling, the Toronto festival's chief executive officer. "She's followed them for a two- or three-year period, not like a quick-hit piece of journalism. She's really with them to see how they grapple with this."

The group told reporters one of the most hurtful effects of the fallout was the American Red Cross’s refusal of a $1 million donation they offered in 2003. But Maines’ original comment continued to have an effect even in 2006: Though the group’s new CD Taking the Long Way debuted at the top of the Billboard chart in June, a planned 43-city tour was cut back after tepid pre-sales in some cities originally thought to be hotbeds of Chicks fans.

Radio didn’t embrace the new disc either. First single "Not Ready to Make Nice” – which referenced the controversy in its lyrics - peaked at No. 36 on Billboard's country singles chart, and second, more conventional single "Everybody Knows" only reached No. 48. In Dallas-Fort Worth, only "Nice" was played briefly before listener protests stopped the song from spinning.

Staff writer Mario Tarradell and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

I admit I did like their songs (I don't watch TV so I have never seen any of their videos)--but the killer for me was when the lead singer wore the "FUTK" shirt in public.  Classless--utterly coarse and beneath contempt, as the current quotes affirm.

Dixie-Chicks, please just go away.

This summer Natalie made a comment about saying she didn't know how the Dixie Chicks would fit into country music today, something along the lines of "I am not sure where we fit inbetween 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off' and 'Honkeytonk Badonkadonk."

That pissed me off, because Trace Adkins and Joe Nichols are good folks who make a lot of great music.  If they don't know how to fit in, they are welcome to try another genre, "Music that Sucks."

Dangers? You're allowed to say anything you want. You are also expected to suffer the consequences of that speech.

Whether it's yelling fire in a crowded theater (arrested), or making political commentary (your sales go down).

No no no... FREEDOM OF SPEECH means you can say ANY wacked-out thing you want to and people will still give you money, worship you, and hang their entire lives on the latest news on your website. That is... unless you say something that liberals don't agree with. In that case, you must be silenced.

I submit that the Cold War actually ended in catastrophe. Yup... the ruskies secretly unleased a barrage of warheads containing a new creation called STUPID GAS that encircled the entire earth. And for whatever reason, SOME of us are immune to it while the rest of the entire world has GONE STUPID. I'm just sayin'...

If I had a business, I sure wouldn't be writing letters to the editor pi$$ing off my customers then act surprised when they stopped coming to my store.  They used a different medium than a paper but it sure got the word out.

+1, I absolutely LOVE to hear them SING. Sadly though, I sure wish they would never TALK! It's a shame. I will never spend any money on them. Sorry for their luck! Some things you need to keep to yourself when in certain environments. It's too bad that hollyweird and dumbasses like the lixie-dicks can't figure this out. It wouldn't bother me that much if they weren't standing in another country while we are at war with a bunch of murderers who have been attacking us for 30+ years and bad mouth our President.

It's mind boggling to me the multi-millions of dollars this has cost them! You know they sit alone curled up in a blanket rocking back and forth sobbing quietly thinking of it.

Oh Well, like they are exercising their rights to mouth-off. I am exercising my rights NOT to spend any of my hard-earned AMERICAN supporting, Patriotic, Military money on their CD's.
