If you can get cell service can you get the internet via the cell phone through FoxFi, right?
Yes, it works just fine on my Droid X, You need to have data signal... some places you may get voice but not data, and tethering won't work in those areas. |
|
If by no data plan you mean no tethering data plan, then yes. I have used and abused it. I even paid the 7 bucks for the full version. Wayyyy worth it.
If you are talking about having an android without pay the $30(I still have unlimited) bucks a month for normal internet service on your phone, then no it wont work. I do not believe it is even possible to have an android on verizon's networks without a data plan of some sort. Verizon has not charged me a dime for using Foxfi. I stopped using it when my home internet speed surpassed 4g LTE speed, not by much though. ETA: it really helps to root your device. |

Once you go to android 4.1 or higher, it won't work. Google took out the back door it used. Huh? I'm using pdanet (with integrated foxfi) on my new Galaxy S4 (Android 4.2.2). Works great for me! Yep i think the free versions do not work. pay for something like pda net and you should be good. download it and try it before you buy |
|
Worked awesome on my Droid 3 for about a week when I moved, then Verizon figured it out & shut me down.
I can still make it work for a couple of hours, but eventually I'll get the Verizon "you aren't paying for tethering" screen. I don't know why they give a shit, if I have to tether, I'm still going to use the bandwidth regardless if I'm using my phone instead of a tablet or laptop. And I have spare batteries for my phone in my pocket. |

Yes it works but some phones like my POS RAZR Max HD have issues with it. It has worked great with my other phones but with this phone I can only use it through a USB cable. My other phones worked with the cable, Bluetooth and it worked as a wireless hotspot. I am a Motorola premier service provide and I still won't ever buy another Motorola phone.
Get foxfi and pdanet(one bought the other). Just Google your phone and foxfi to make sure it works for you phone. |

FCC slapped Verizon's peepee for charging people to tether their smartphone to their other device, because the 4G spectrum's rules state the provider cannot discriminate based on traffic. So, Verizon can charge you $20/mo to use their app, but they can't stop you from using FoxFi or another variant.
I am a bit annoyed with FoxFi, because the free version used to be pretty sweet, but then they pushed out a patch that made you reboot FoxFi every 20 megabytes or something dumb like that, unless you paid $15 for the full version. You can still get the free version and try it out before you buy. Kharn |

What device do you have and what plan do you have? Droid Razr and I have a 1GB per month data plan. I don't use it much, just when we are traveling and need the GPS or email function. If you tether for much of anything you will burn through that 1GB easy... If you are on the tiered data plan the "share everything - even with the NSA - plan" you should be able to use the VZW hotspot at no charge. Call them and confirm. |

Thanks. What is mifi? |

Quoted: My bionic worked and now I am using a Samsung S3 and just checked it works still.Quoted: Once you go to android 4.1 or higher, it won't work. Google took out the back door it used. This. It worked on my Bionic up thru mid-April when my phone automatically installed a bunch of updates. Now I can't get FoxFi to work no matter what I do. Have you uninstalled and reinstalled? |

Now I have an Iphone, without jailbreaking I cannot hotspot or tether my phone without jailbreaking or paying verizon for it (and I would lose my unlimited data if I did that). Actually you can pay them the $30/ for the unlimited and the $30/ month for the tethering or jailbrake it and just pay the $30 and get the tethering for free. This is one thing that is a total racket. Read those links in that thread I posted. They are ready got fined for it and still refuse to not do it on their unlimited plan. The hotspot function is not a service they provide, it is a function of your phone. |
