I work the swing shift and I'm trying to change my sleep pattern, but I cant get to sleep when I get home.  I'm stuck staying awake till the early morning.  If I go to bed I toss and turn, it sucks.

Looking for a natural method.  Melatonin or an herbal muscle relaxant.

YMMV.

Melatonin gives me a woozy hangover.  No pain or nausea, but my head is fogged for about half of the next day.

I don't care for it.  When I need a sleeping aid I take a Benadryl.

1 benadryl + turkey sanwich with lots of turkey + 1 alcoholic beverage (glass of wine, one shot, a beer)

you wont toss and turn.

I tried it a couple of times, but it gave me the "restless leg syndrome"(?) and actually ended up keeping me awake.

Turns out that turkey does not cause drowsiness or sleepiness, it's an urban myth. The "enzyme/compound/whatever" that causes sleepiness and is present in turkey is in such minute amounts that even if you ate a ton, it would not be active in causing sleepiness. The ton of turkey in your stomach might be a problem though.

As to asjusting sleep schedules... EXCERCISE. Once I started hitting the gym every two days for the last three years, i've no longer had any problems with sleep and insomnia like i did in the days where I was a computer nerd. I beleive staying up all night on weekends to play online shooting games probably had something to do with my difficulty in achieving regular sleep on the weekdays as well

Melatonin sort of worked for me, but I was also tired all day.

+1 to exercise.

We use it for jet lag.  I'm talking shifting from mountain time to UK or Taiwan.  I never bother with it when flying to the east coast.

3 to 5 mg 1 or 2 hours before we need to go to sleep & we don't wake up at the wrong time, can actually sleep through the night.
Usually only use it the first day or 2 in the new time zone.

My doctor told me that for Benadryl to work on an adult, you need minimum 50mg or 2 tablets.  I've done this and it has helped me immensely.  I also was prescribed Ambien and it was great as well!  (for me anyway!)

Good luck, after awhile, insomnia is just damn annoying!

OMFG.... Ambien fucks me up big time!  I go absolutely crazy.  If I was on Ambien and you told me to go evade traffic on I-5 I probably would do it.... no kidding.  Oh yeah and even if I did it for 2 hours and made it back alive I wouldn't remember ANY of it.

Some of the things my roommates got me to do........ oh well nevermind!

+1  Melatonin did nothing for me when I worked the noc-shift for 10 years.  OTOH, 2 Benadryl tabs knocked me on my ass.  Seriously, it works, & clears your sinuses to boot.  Take it & be asleep w/in 15 - 30 mins.  A small glass of red wine is a pretty good narcoleptic primer, & it doesn't conflict w/ the Benadry, either.

Works for me.

I use the 1 mg size.  The 3 mg tabs make me groggy the next day.

It works very well.  Just don't use too much of it.  Too much can either leave you awake and groggy or can leave you wide awake a few hours after taking it.  The secret is to take enough to work but not take too much.  The usual 3 microgram pills you see are about 2x as large as a 35 year-old adult needs.  If you're younger you need around a 1/3 or less of the pill.z

Melatonin works great for me.  Ambien makes me halucinate. Very unpleasant.
