Say you have two dogs vs. five or six coyotes. What type of dogs would win that type of fight?
Just curious - I have heard of dogs like labs being attacked - say one or two - and losing the fight. |

I had a border collie that would go off and fight coyotes. He'd always come back all fucked up. One time he came back with half an ear. What did the coyotes look like? The look like a tall skinny GSD. No, I know what a fucking coyote looks like. What did the coyote look like after the fight? |

coyotes are pretty damn quick, seen how they work together to wear a dog out and normally don't even get touched. Once the dog is worn out it is all over. 1 on 1 I have seen a couple decent sized dogs tear them to pieces, the problem is when they have a numbers advantage. |

I had that chance to see a friends Irish Wolfhound run down a coyote and pick it up by the back and shake it into pieces. Pretty impressive, that being said normal dogs would not stand a chance against several coyotes Yeah, that's what I'd bet on: dogs that are bred to kill wolves. Those things are huge. |

My dane got one that somehow got into our fence last year...pulled pretty much the same maneuver you describe. It was all smashed and broken. |

Quoted: Well, Rhodesian Ridgebacks kill lions, so I am thinking they would kill a coyote pretty easily. One on one.... And RR don't kill lions: "In the earlier parts of its history, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also been known as Van Rooyen's Lion Dogs, the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog—Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona—because of their ability to distract a lion while awaiting their master to make the kill." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodesian_Ridgeback |

Bingo. I watched a show on the re-introduction of wolves into yellowstone. The coyotes had packed up and were basically living as "top dog". The wolves ended this in very short order. |

The guys who have said that it depends upon the dog are correct.
I have had a yote in my backyard 20 or 30 feet from my dogs three times in the last week. One dog is a Westie, all of 15#. She is a ferocious varmint dog, but just supper for a yote. My other dog is a 60# American boxer. He is all muscle but only 6 months old. Both dogs get worried up something fierce when the yotes are around. A couple of yotes would do them both in at this point. My friend has lost two dogs to the yotes. The last one was a lab. My friend hates yotes and kills everyone he can find. I'm going to kill the ones coming in my yard. I told my wife that I was going to hang their skulls on the fence line at the back to warn any others away. The good news is that when the mountain lions are around, the coyotes thin out. But then, I've had two lions eyeing my dogs too. A guy can't get a break. |

We run and kill them with deer hounds, kill several every year, 32 pounder killed thanksgiving day, killed a 45 pounder last year.

It sounds silly to anyone who understands raising livestock, but before the wolves were re-introduced into Yellowstone some Enviro-loonie groups were claiming that it would reduce predation among sheep because the wolves would thin out the coyotes. ![]() And here in Utah every winter we have dogs in the suburbs of Salt Lake City getting munched by cougars. Usually it's a very young or very old cat who can't hunt deer properly, but even then they still have no problem taking down big dogs. |

Fixed. The wiki article quoted in another rebuttal goes on to say that the hunting technique was considered a "suicide mission" for the ridgebacks. |

Quoted: Quoted: The coyotes are probably going to win against most breeds except the bigger sheep dogs who are bred to fight them. A pack of coyotes can do a lot of damage, they can even bring down deer and elk. ![]() Yeah, they can. Happens all the time out east, where the deer coyotes grow a little bigger. ETA: Fixed. And if a pack of coyotes can take down a 150 pound dog –– as almost everyone here agrees –– why then can't they take down a 150-pound deer or immature elk, especially if it's stuck in deep snow? |
