Say you have two dogs vs. five or six coyotes. What type of dogs would win that type of fight?

Just curious - I have heard of dogs like labs being attacked - say one or two - and losing the fight.

I had a border collie that would go off and fight coyotes. He'd always come back all fucked up. One time he came back with half an ear.

The coyotes are probably going to win against most breeds except the bigger sheep dogs who are bred to fight them.

A pack of coyotes can do a lot of damage, they can even bring down deer and elk.

When I was stationed in Yakima, my friends English Mastiff would "play" with coyotes like a stuffed toy.

Here in AZ the 'Yotes usually win.
I'm not sure what kind of domestic dog it would take to fend them them off, If I had to lay down money it would go on the yotes.....

He's asking if the dog got the worst of it or the yotes.

ETA::he beat me to it by 10 seconds.

Every dog is different, no two labs, etc will react the same.  Wild coyotes that hunt and kill their own food for survival will not be scared of a regular dog that is not ready to really get down and dirty Vick style.

Guys around here hunt coyotes with greyhounds.  I never would have guessed that a greyhound had the stones to take on a coyote, but they certainly do.

It be a tough one, pound for pound a Yote is one of the toughest creatures around. You should see how much abuse they will take from a bullet that would stop a pissed off boar in his tracks.

I had that chance to see a friends Irish Wolfhound run down a coyote and pick it up by the back and shake it into pieces.  Pretty impressive, that being said normal dogs would not stand a chance against several coyotes

I really doubt 2 dogs of any breed could put up much of a fight against 5 or 6 coyotes. Lots of breeds could match up very evenly one on one and some could match up 2 on 1 but three on 1 is a different story.

coyotes are pretty damn quick, seen how they work together to wear a dog out and normally don't even get touched.  Once the dog is worn out it is all over.

1 on 1 I have seen a couple decent sized dogs tear them to pieces, the problem is when they have a numbers advantage.

And RR don't kill lions:

"In the earlier parts of its history, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also been known as Van Rooyen's Lion Dogs, the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog—Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona—because of their ability to distract a lion while awaiting their master to make the kill."

Incidentally, that illustrates one of the main reasons coyotes are perhaps the best runners among the wild dogs:  They have to be in order to survive in places where there are wolves.

Had a St. Bernard that apparently got in a dust-up with a yote or yotes.  Don't know what the yotes looked like, but the Saint made it home dragging his manhood in the dirt behind him.  The vet had to finish the job.

Bingo.

I watched a show on the re-introduction of wolves into yellowstone.

The coyotes had packed up and were basically living as "top dog".

The wolves ended this in very short order.

The guys who have said that it depends upon the dog are correct.

I have had a yote in my backyard 20 or 30 feet from my dogs three times in the last week.

One dog is a Westie, all of 15#. She is a ferocious varmint dog, but just supper for a yote. My other dog is a 60# American boxer. He is all muscle but only 6 months old.

Both dogs get worried up something fierce when the yotes are around. A couple of yotes would do them both in at this point.

My friend has lost two dogs to the yotes. The last one was a lab. My friend hates yotes and kills everyone he can find.

I'm going to kill the ones coming in my yard. I told my wife that I was going to hang their skulls on the fence line at the back to warn any others away.

The good news is that when the mountain lions are around, the coyotes thin out. But then, I've had two lions eyeing my dogs too. A guy can't get a break.

Depends on which part of the country said yote is in.

Coyotes in the Midwest and upper Midwest are considerably larger and more wolf like.

I've hunted in Ohio and seen Coyotes that had to have mingled their genes with wolves along the migration east.

If you got something like those Ridgebacks, or Caucasian Ovcharkas, I think that two dogs could take on 5 or 6 coyotes.  The Ovcharkas were bread to protect livestock from wolves, their fur is good protection from bites, and they look like they could tear your average 30 pound coyote in half in a matter of seconds.

You need dogs that will stay at the house and defend.  Dogs that break rank and run off into the darkness after a yote are going to end up getting killed.

It sounds silly to anyone who understands raising livestock, but before the wolves were re-introduced into Yellowstone some Enviro-loonie groups were claiming that it would reduce predation among sheep because the wolves would thin out the coyotes.

And here in Utah every winter we have dogs in the suburbs of Salt Lake City getting munched by cougars.  Usually it's a very young or very old cat who can't hunt deer properly, but even then they still have no problem taking down big dogs.

The wiki article quoted in another rebuttal goes on to say that the hunting technique was considered a "suicide mission" for the ridgebacks.

Yeah, they can.  Happens all the time out east, where the deer coyotes grow a little bigger.

ETA:  Fixed.  And if a pack of coyotes can take down a 150 pound dog –– as almost everyone here agrees –– why then can't they take down a 150-pound deer or immature elk, especially if it's stuck in deep snow?
