No shit. I've got a loaded AR in my lap and I just got off the phone with 911. There's a big German Shepherd that lives down the street. He's gotten loose a few times before and he sort of gravitates towards our yard. I live with my parents, so my mom's right out front gardening. The dog approached within a couple feet of her, barking - this dog has behaved aggressively, growling and snapping at people, before, so I'm not taking chances. I think this is the third time we've had to call animal control on this one. Naturally I had to let ARFCOM know as it happens. |
The dog was making its way down the other side of the street when I was typing. When it was actually, you know, RIGHT THERE I had it covered. The cops are already out front, animal control's on its way. This isn't new, the dog's owners have been cited many times before. Hell, the cop who's out there knew exactly what was going on and was talking about the pile of complaints and tickets against these guys - "they just don't learn". PS my computer is at the base of a 2nd-story window which has excellent coverage of the front yard and street. EDIT: apparently some of the guys who live at the house the dog belongs to got arrested recently for possession of stolen property or something.

So you were aiming an AR in the direction of your dear old mother, because the neighbors Chihuahua got out and was pissed because his head really is the size of a golf ball? And you were "covering" your mom from the second story. Wow. I really don't know where to go with this one.... ![]() Tag for pics of a dog in a kennel, that you claim is the one.

Not really. If a big, strange, seemingly aggressive dog belonging to people who obviously can't control it and apparently have a criminal history, wandered into your yard and was menacing your loved ones you'd want to be armed, wouldn't you? PS I put the rifle away as soon as the cops got here. Pics to follow. |
I'm always armed. But then, I'm not a child. I just think you're taking the dog and yourself a little too seriously. If it was truly about to harm somebody, you should have shot it rather than planned your ARFCOM thread. But it sounds to me like you should just keep the gun put away and call animal control when you see it loose. And yes, I've dealt with this exact situation. |

Nice way to lose your firearms! Discharging a firearm less than 1/4 mile from an occupied structure is illegal here... I don't know about where you live though.. So I have a baseball bat and pepperspray handy for aggressive strays.. And with a gun, you would probably have to wait until the dog started mauling your mom before you would legally be able to shoot it... Why take the chance? Throw a rock at it or something.. |
The dog is not shot. The "draw down" lasted about 10 seconds. The rest of the time the rifle was slung while I grabbed the phone, stood watch, and attention-whored. |
All of those laws that I've seen make exceptions for legitimate self defense. Is the crime a felony there? |
Ok..I'm trying to picture this.. You are on the phone to 911 and outside walking around with an AR slung over your shoulder? I guarantee if you were outside like that when the po-po showed up, the dog wouldn't have been the ONLY thing drawn down on... eeek |
