So I was Driving over to my cousins house to pick up table for my new apartment, and I notice in my rear view mirror that Im being tailgated by a white honda. There are 4 males in the car. Im not in a rush so I slow down and hope they pass me. They back up a bit, then there tailgating again. Then they back up again. The whole time I notice there drifting into the turn lane. (the street I was on was 2 lane on both sides and a turn lane inbetween) we were both in the left lane. Then he drifts into the right lane and nearly hits a F250. Ive driven drunk enough times to be able to tell when someones driving drunk. (I dont do that anymore and thankfully nothing ever happend to me) I decide to call the cops so I pull out my phone and dial 911. Right as I dial the honda moves into the turn lane and waits for the light. The operator answers and I tell her I want to report a drunk driver. I tell her the license plate number, there discription and direction of travel. I dont turn and I keep going down the road I was on.
So I ask you AFRCOM, what do you do in this situation? Was I right to do what I did? Should I have followed and reported location? stoped them and held them at gun point? POLL inbound And Before you'll ask I have a CHL and I was carring my Kinber Ultra RCP II with Federal Hydrashok in the tube... Im a crime fighter

MYOB I cant begin to say how much this answer sucks. Your mindset also makes me believe that you will cower in fear when a cirminal or terrorist trys to murder your family or when someone is bleeding to death in a car wreck. dwi accidents kill and injure more people every year than every other crime combined if i remember correctly. |
| In some states it makes the arrest much harder if the officer doesn't actually observe the drunk driver in "physical control of the motor vehicle"....so if you tear them out of the driver seat before the LEO arrives the the case probly won't go far...etc. Callin in the license plate, vehicle description, and direction of travel is a huge help to LE and in some states the phone report constitutes PC for an "investigatory stop". |
|
I dont know about the citizen arrest part, but if they were really weaving badly outside their lane and getting ready to hit someone head on then I think its expected to call that in to the cops.
I saw an old man one time like that driving in front of me, obvious he was hammered, but i did not call it in, probably should have |

You did right by calling in the drunk.
I worked 12 years in the convience store business and have seen plenty of drucks coming in the store and driving. I never hesitated to call the cops. The funniest DD was a car that came in early sunday morning with a flat tire. 4 guys get out obviously drunk. It looked like the keystone cops trying to change the tire so I call the police. While I waited on the SD to show the driver gets in the car and leaves his friends sitting with the tire. Curiosity got to me so I walked out and asked where their ride went. They replied 'Henry went to get the tire fixed.' Ok I walked slowly back in the store. The Deputy came in on the other side of the store. I told him what was going on and he nearly fell down laughing. He waited and the car comes pulling in and the deouty pulls in behind the car blocking it. The SD arrested all of the drunk bunch. Always call on a DD you might be saving someones life. |

No, your answer sucks. Too many busybodies in this world. It would be a much better place if people would tend to their own business. If criminal or terrorist is attempting to cause me harm, and me seeing someone weaving in the road, is completely unrelated incidents. |
| I was almost hit head on by a drunk driver once. Pulled over and saw the idiot crash into a pillar holding up the roof of a parking area for an apartment complex... called 911 and saw the cops come up and bust the idiot. Drunk drivers should go to prison, the ones that kill should be executed. |

I've called in drunks numerous times while driving the tractor-trailer. I've known too many people that were killed and I have seen the results of more than a few DUI accidents. I am usually in Texas and I call the DPS roadside assistance number and they transfer me to the local jurisdiction. -p. |

My brother was nearly killed by a drunk in 86. The drunk left the hospital with a broken leg. A month later by brother left with 1 good arm, a few unbroken ribs, and an unbroken back/neck.
Hang the fuckers!!! ETA: The drunk didn't leave in handcuffs. His buddy came to pick him up. |

I've become convinced that 66% of the people I'd figure are drunk driving are just probably dipshits and that's the way they drive...you know...texting, putting on makeup, talking on the phone...all the above, whatever. Par for the course. I have seen people going to town on burgers here and moving in and out of lanes. Who the fuck is that stupid. |
|
I call em in when I see them. I mean the dangerous looking ones where they are weaving or just acting crazy. Some people just can't drive for shit though.
I put people who drive drunk or high up there with murderers and pedophiles. Euthanize them all for being fucking idiots. |

No sob story. I am just a believer in that unless something is affecting me or my family, it is none of my business. I have two friends with permanent, lifelong disabilities from what drunk drivers did to them. "Hey nevermind that guy waving a gun around. He hasn't shot anyone yet." Fuck that. If you're on the roads, drunk, you're meddling in MY life and you deserve whatever you get. You're not taking it seriously enough. |

No sob story. I am just a believer in that unless something is affecting me or my family, it is none of my business. Criminals are your business. Law enforcement powers are delegated by the people to the police. The cops are doing a job you'd be expected to do in the absence of the police. Failing to report criminals is a failure in your civic duty. When I was an MP I arrested many drunk drivers, several who could barely stand once they got out from behind the wheel. I've reported several since I got out of the service. Once, back before we had cellphones, my wife and I were followed a drunk for miles down the freeway. He exited at the same place we did. As soon as we got home, I called it into 911. While I was on the phone with dispatch, I heard a traffic accident call come in in the background. It was our drunk. He had rammed a car full of teenage girls on their way home from the movies. My wife and I went down to the accident scene to provide statements to the officer on scene. The drunk had hit their car with enough force to rip his front wheel off his truck. Luckily no one was seriously injured. |

DUI = 10 years no license. That would kick ass. If you commit a DUI you have lost control of alcohol. Period. I don't drink unless I know I won't be driving. You do it once, you likely have a problem and are likely to do it again. I'll admit to a lack of complete objectivity, I lost a friend to a drunk driver. |

The "Ma drunk drivin' baby didn't hurt nobody" shit gets old.
Driving drunk is no different than picking up a random gun, pointing it at the nearest person, and pulling the trigger. The gun may have been empty the first 10 times you did it, but that doesn't mean the 11th time it won't have a round in the chamber. Each time is a roll of the dice and the drunker you are, the greater your odds of coming up a POS murder. You should be punished for your wreckless endangerment of others (I really don't care if you cream yourself). I would have done exactly what the OP did. |
|
Quoted: There are two kinds of people that drink, those that have DUI's and those that get lucky. I got caught one night, I still drink but never like I did before and never do I drive after I drink. Bull-fucking-shit. There are also those responsible enough to not drive a fucking car after drinking. It's not a hard concept. |
|
hit it.
but as far as drunk driving... there is a difference between being drunk and a danger to all around you and being over the legal limit. they say two beers can put someone over the legal limit and can anyone honestly feel anything after two beers? .07 is BS |

However, I also have to agree with the law and it states that I should not drive after 2 beers so I don't. |

As an aside, I find it slightly amusing how a forum filled with a bunch of people who do nothing but deride welfare recipients with chants of "personal responsibility" are so willing to turn a blind eye and actually defend a abdication of that responsibility so extreme that can literally cost someone their life. |
