[rant] Okay, it gets real frustrating when I find a news article or link and post it here - with a clear and identifiable thread title including keywords in the title of the article - only to find that thread hit by the "Dupe Police" who post a link to an earlier thread of the same article BUT SOME UTTERLY UNRELATED GENERIC TITLE! Then my thread - with the more descriptive title gets locked for being a dupe and the original thread which cannot be searched for unless you look up "Gee look at THIS" stays up which probably means someone else will eventually post it again after searching for all the logical kewords and not finding it. I think if a thread has a generic title that can't be traced to the original article or content, it isn't a "dupe" to post the same article but with a much more identifiable title. [/rant]

It's an artificial control that doesn't really work. There are a lot of separate and distinct issues that shouldn't be lumped together because they involve say Israel and Palestine, or Hezbollah and Israel. If we didn't play the dupe game we'd get smaller threads to wade through and a larger number of participants and more perspectives. It could be worse lke on Silicon Investor where members can start a thread and moderate people off just ...well just because....and even before you disagree...sort of a pre-emptive ban. We should do something the government never seems to do and that is conduct a small scale and limited experiment and let dupes or what people feel are dupes carry on. When they're truly a dupe, a lot of people, like myself will voluntarily shut it down with a title comment or in a lot of cases one will just gather favor over another. it ain't like 5 people talking all at once and even if occcasionally it is so what, ...? so, +1 Mac.... |

"Dupe Police" are funny. Just because they have no lives and can spend 24/7 on a forum doesnt mean everybody else can. They also need to realize threads get bumped to the back pages very quickly on this forum due to a high amount of people posting. Alot of times not EVERYONE has seen a post even if it was posted before. I posted a few threads here before but it gets annoying when someone yells dupe on you. Hell I'll just keep interesting stuff to myself now, since I cant monitor every thread posted here I figure its prolly been posted already anyways. |
If the content is the same, regardless of the title, its a dupe in my opinion. |
| Why should two threads covering the same topic be allowed to run concurrently? I don't know about you, but I learn about the content of many threads by opening them up and not relying solely on a search before posting. I agree that thread starters would be wise to improve on some titles..... |
